Escape The City: An Inside Look At DC’s Hottest Getaway Locations

This past year has been a whirlwind. We think we speak for everyone when we say that we’re all incredibly deserving for some time away! We’ve all been there – trying to balance a social life with work (not to mention relaxation) seems borderline impossible these days. Prior to the pandemic, we’d consider hopping on a plane to an out of state destination. However, why waste time, money, and risk exposure when Washington DC is easily accessible. Although we missed the Philly cherry blossoms dearly, DC is a very close second to the place we call home. For my Philadelphians, this one’s for you: Let’s talk DC.

Starting off strong with transportation.  Without a doubt, the best form of transportation to DC is Amtrak. Super quick, easy, and affordable to ride – Amtrak had us from Philadelphia to DC before we could even finish our magazine!

Where To Stay

We could honestly go on for days about Yours Truly, located on 1143 New Hampshire Ave NW, Washington, DC 20037. The main thing to note about this hotel, is that they really make you feel at home. From the luxurious interior design, stylish and comfortable sleeping arrangements, and kitchens to cook your preferred meals, they TRULY allow you to settle in. One of the absolute best parts about the rooms are the record players they provide you with. They also include not one, but TWO reading nooks. What else more could you ask for?

Speaking of making yourself feel out home, did we mention that you can bring your dog? No? Well..that’s a major plus.

Possibly the most valuable asset that this hotel offers is the fact that it is located in the heart of Washington DC. With a plethora of galleries, museums/memorials, and restaurants right around the corner, the heel toe express will do just fine!

Where To Eat

One of our favorites from our past trip was Duke’s Grocery. For those of you who are unaware of what this restaurant is, let me introduce you to the best burger that we’ve EVER had. Located on 1513 17th St NW Washington, DC 20036, Duke’s provides an interesting take on your not so average pub food and drinks. With filling meals, and a fun and playful atmosphere, Duke’s is a DC must see!

Up next is El Techo. Classified as an “adult treehouse” by The Washintonian, this tropical restaurant will make you feel as though you’re in the presence of sunshine! The dinner is out of this world – from their tacos, to the stir fry. El Techno is home to a younger demographic, so we know what that means – Instagram pics!

Cortez is fantastic, and we don’t just say this because of their amazing little rooftop! It’s a Mexican tequila bar located in the historic Shaw neighborhood of DC. They accept reservations for parties of 6 or more, and pride themselves on being a neighborhood gathering place! If you want to take our advice, head here for cocktails – you won’t regret it!

A fan of crabs? Head to The Avenue on 5540 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20015. We’re not kidding when we say this place has the best ones we’ve ever tasted. On the other hand, if you’re not into seafood, their wings are awesome! The owner is extremely personable and passionate about his job, and has a connection to Philly (so show him, and his business, some love!)

Finishing off our DC restaurant spots with Nobu. Looking for something more upscale to get dressed for? This is the place. It’s a Japanese inspired restaurant located at 2525 M St NW, Washington, DC 20037, and the Ceviche is the best we’ve ever had. The service was outstanding, and for the money, it lived up to its expectations. If we’re honest, it was the best way to end our weekend getaway on a high note!

So there you have it, your next weekend vacation all laid out for you with a beautiful bow! We enjoyed every second of what Washington DC had to offer, and are already planning our next trip. See you there?
