It’s officially Black History Month and what better way to bring back our First Friday interview series than with a woman that inspires so many. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on the incredible Dr. Jen Caudle. You might recognize her as a doctor, professor, or from your TV and Instagram scrolls. She is a powerhouse in the community and we were thrilled to have Dr. Jen share all about her bustling life!
PPRG: As someone who has been in various roles within the medical field such as an on-air personality, associate professor, and practicing doctor, how do you manage everything and still have a work-life balance?
JC: I absolutely LOVE the work that I do and I’m a mission-driven person, which for me is great. But I’ll be honest, I don’t always achieve a work-life balance. I do try to stay honest with myself about how I’m feeling though, and what I need to stay whole. I always try to make sure my mind and body and mission is in sync.
PPRG: Being a strong advocate for health and wellness, what lifestyle habits or practices do you emphasize to your patients for maintaining overall well-being?
JC: Getting enough sleep, exercising, eating healthy, minimizing stressors and not smoking and drinking alcohol only in moderation are some of the most important things we can do to stay healthy. I emphasize these to my patients and I follow these myself!
PPRG: What advice do you have for aspiring young women entering the medical field or a field of their choosing?
JC: Work hard, find good mentors, chart a path that is right for YOU, and try not to compare yourself to others!
PPRG: We see your incredible journey as a health advocate and family doctor, but we’re curious – what other things bring joy and fulfillment to your life outside of work?
JC: I love eating pizza (everything in moderation, right?) and I love watching movies! I also love the arts- theatre, dance and music are my favs. I’m also an opera-lover. And, did I mention pizza?!
PPRG: In what ways did participating in the Miss America pageant as Miss Iowa in 1999 impact and shape the trajectory of your life and career?
JC: It gave me confidence that I didn’t have. I was an unlikely contestant- my first pageant was at the age of 20 and I had a LOT of work to do to become “pageant-ready.” I competed in the Miss America system because I needed scholarship money. At the time I was a sophomore at Princeton University working multiple jobs to help pay for school. Competing in the Miss America system- I became Miss Iowa ‘99 and competed in the 1999 Miss America Pageant allowed me to earn scholarship money that I needed. I also came out of the experience with tons of confidence and motivation to reach for my dreams. I’m eternally grateful for this opportunity- it truly changed my life.
PPRG: What’s your favorite way to relax and unwind after a busy day?
JC: The truth is, I love watching tv (and movies, which I’ve mentioned). Honestly, a few episodes of “House Hunters” on HGTV helps me unwind quickly!
PPRG: Do you have a favorite health and wellness business in Philly?
JC: There are so many amazing health and wellness businesses in our city, it’s hard to name a few! From healthcare facilities to wellness, there’s so much that Philly offers.
PPRG: If you were to take someone on a tour of Philly, where would you take them?
JC: I would take them to Rittenhouse square, the waterfront, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, to some of our AMAZING restaurants, the Liberty Bell and the Constitution Center and so many more places!
PPRG: What would you consider to be the highlight of your career so far?
JC: The fact that I have the career that I have IS the highlight. I never dreamed I would be able to practice medicine, teach, appear on tv and on social media and do the work I do. It’s literally a dream come true and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about how grateful I am.
What a fantastic way to jumpstart the #FirstFriday interview series again! Dr. Jen’s story continues to inspire, reminding us that every dream achieved is a highlight in itself. If you don’t already, make sure to give her a follow on social media!
