Dining Spotlight: Sampan

Available year-round, the seven-course tasting menu at Sampan is bursting with a variety of Asian fusion flavors. In addition to a creative menu, service comes first and foremost here. Our table of three had three different dietary needs, and yet the staff were more than glad to work with us to accommodate our needs – a courtesy which is always incredibly appreciated at a restaurant.

To start the chef’s tasting, we opted for delectable seafood small plates. Tuna soy crackers arrived to the table in bite-sized pieces, and shrimp and lobster dumplings bathed in a big bowl of warm miso broth. For vegetarians, the edamame dumplings selection is enriched by a hint of luxurious truffles. Then we chose Thai shrimp and BBQ tofu for the satay course. For such a simple dish, these skewers were incredibly flavorful and reminiscent of authentic Asian street food. Between the five hot and cold choices for the next course, we chose crab wonton tacos, which really highlighted the fusion concept.

As we moved into the main dishes of the meal, we were continually surprised by the bold yet balanced flavors. The servings of shrimp pad thai and sesame udon were generous and delicious. The seared scallops dish hit the whole palette with sweetness and savoriness from the scallops; along with a slight bitterness from charred snap peas, spiciness from the chili, and a little tang from the pickled cauliflower. The Chilean sea bass was more classic in style, with the sweet and tender fish served on top of a cauliflower puree and long bean salad.

After all that food, the best part may just have been dessert. Though the menu clearly says “soft serve”, the presentation really surprised us. Each person received a serving of mini housemade cones in three amazing flavors: Twizzler vanilla, chocolate-covered pretzel, and cookies and creme. The unanimous favorite was the creative Twizzler vanilla. It was a delightful and fun way to end our meal.

At $45 daily (or $35 during CCD Restaurant Week), Sampan’s chef tasting menu is one of the best bargains in the city. To keep up with daily specials and news, follow Sampan on Facebook and Twitter. Also, be sure to check out the Graffiti Bar in their backyard during the warmer weather.
