The Igloo

Serving Philly since 2012, The Igloo is a frozen dessert shop built on community and comfort. The Igloo offers a wide variety of homemade treats, including soft-serve and gelato, vegan ice cream, Italian Yogorino, and a classic Philly water ice. What began as a small World AIDS Day cupcake fundraiser in 2015, has grown into a beloved brick-and-mortar that uplifts Philly’s LGBTQ+ and Black communities through food, advocacy, and joy. From rich and moist cake slices to chicken and dumpling soup, everything at Darnel’s is made fresh and with heart. Cuffie-Scott, a Johnson & Wales-trained chef and Temple graduate, partners with nonprofits like COLOURS and Bebashi to combat stigma and directly support those affected by HIV/AIDS.

This cute Mt. Airy bookstore opened in 2005 by Sheila Allen Avelin, who made her “indie bookstore” aesthetic dreams come true. Sheila chose Mt. Airy because it had that true “shop local” vibe: a tight-knit, welcoming community where she could build a life and raise her child surrounded by creativity, connection, and care. Big Blue Marble Bookstore truly has something for everyone, like children’s books, literary fiction, sci-fi, poetry, YA, African-American non-fiction, history, contemporary politics, and cookbooks. Since day one, Big Blue Marble has been all about equality and connection with a large LGBTQIA community. With a deep love for Philly, a background in DIY bike repair, and soul, Shelly created a bike shop in the Fairmont community that engages in social justice.
