Marketing vs. PR vs. Advertising

Ever wonder if PR, marketing, and advertising are all the same thing? Public Relations, Marketing, and Advertising are all avenues of public image, brand exposure, and company reputation, just in different ways. Luckily Philly PR Girl has mapped out what each avenue actually focuses on.

Public Relations

Public Relations is the practice of purposefully releasing information that can affect the public’s perception of a client or business. It focuses on a business’s image, making sure that the company’s best foot is always forward. PR focuses on fostering a good relationship between a client and the public. Publicists use press releases, special events, and personalized messages to outlets to get their message across. These events can be social events or even charity events, to facilitate trust and meaningful relationships with the community. A company having a good Public Relations effort can really boost their business and build rapport.

Advertising

Advertising is a more intentional and sponsored message that companies use to sell or promote a product. Advertisements can come in the form of billboards, commercials, and promotions on social media. Advertising differs from PR in the way the message is being distributed to the public. The advertisement is paid, so that means the person buying the ad has complete control over the message being sent out. Advertising is a little less personal than PR, by making a bigger picture type of message to reach a bigger audience. Advertising is also audience-specific, meaning that if an advertiser wanted to reach a younger audience, they would probably advertise on outlets like Instagram & Twitter. In contrast, working with an older audience, advertisers may work to reach those consumers by TV.

Marketing

Marketing is a culmination of efforts and activities to make sure businesses are getting their products and services out in front of the public. Marketing can either be business to business or business to consumer, depending on what services or goods are being offered. It’s more of a research-focused type of effort to find out what works in regards to getting messages across. This means it’s extremely important that marketers keep current events in mind. With the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of companies have marketed their products to fit into the safety mold. Another example of marketing is influencer marketing and it has become popular with the boom in social media influencers, public images promoting products or businesses on social media platforms.

PR, advertising, and marketing all intertwine in some way. At the same time, they all have their individual differences. By utilizing each and every avenue, a business can really thrive and get its products and services out to the public, all while keeping its image in good condition.
