Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Pop Up Garden

Last week we decided to see what all the fuss was about at Philadelphia Horticultural Society’s newest Pop-Up Garden on South Broad.  This hangout is located right in the heart of the city, just across the street from the Kimmel Center; and yet, it somehow feels secluded from the busy city.  Lounging around wooden picnic tables, at high top bar tables, or on colorful cushions, you’re instantly transported away from the noise and the summer smog.

The hostess was incredibly friendly, shared lots of information about the exciting new space, and even signed us up as PHS members.  We went for a glass of Victory’s Summer Ale and Slyfox Royal Weisse before grabbing sandwiches off of Jose Garces’s short but comprehensive menu.  My friend’s pulled pork was gone in a flash, while I enjoyed a veggie sandwich stuffed with plenty of cucumber and arugula on a buttery roll.  We couldn’t resist dessert and ended with very affordable options of $2 chocolate peanut butter pie in a jar and $3 chocolate walnut ice cream sandwich with sea salt.

The pop-up got busy quickly as the evening went on, but the unique layout of the space ensured that it never felt too crowded.  While it’s bittersweet that this Garden will be concrete again come fall, enjoy this relaxing pop-up garden and appreciate the summer.

Insider Tip:  Don’t miss Quizzo at the Pop Up July 23rd or August 6th.
