For those of you that don’t mark off every single National “Insert Food Here” Day, we’ve got your back for a very important one. Today is National Ice Cream Day! Lucky for you, Philadelphia literally has some of the best ice cream shops in the world.
Ah, first and foremost, let’s start with Philly’s internationally recognized gem, Capogiro. Admired for its local and fresh ingredients, this gelateria has been a neighborhood favorite for years. Some of my favorite everyday flavors are Fior di Latte, Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla, and Stracciatella.
Another popularly recognized ice cream parlor is Franklin Fountain, nestled in historic Old City. Famous for their retro style and handmade ice cream from local ingredients, the shop’s sundaes are their stars. We recommend The Franklin Mint for a mint-chocolate combo or The Stock Market Crunch for Rocky Road experience.
We love More Than Just Ice Cream because… well, it’s all in the name. They’ve got delicious ice cream and sundaes, but you can also stop by for a full meal (especially good for brunch). We’re suckers for classic brownie sundaes.
While Shake Shack might be causing a craze over their burgers, their custards are a sweet treat. The great thing is that you’ll never get bored; they have a rotating flavor for each day of the week that changes every month. Today, enjoy Blueberry Coffee Cake! Don’t forget about their Concretes that include local mix-ins such as Liberty Shell: vanilla custard, Termini Bros cannoli pieces, strawberry puree, and lemon ricotta.
If all the above choices were a little too mainstream for you, try Little Baby’s Ice Cream located deep in Fishtown/Kensington neighboring Pizza Brain. Starting as a food truck, LBIC became a local favorite in a short amount of time. That’s no surprise since they have crazy and crazy delicious flavors including Earl Grey Sriracha, Balsamic Banana, Yards™ Brown Butter Brawler, Pizza, and Honey Miso Chive.
No matter where you go, this holiday couldn’t come at a better time. It’s the perfect excuse to get into an air-conditioned building and treat yourself!
