Dining Out Spotlight: Stephen Starr Highlights

Did you ever have a girls’ weekend that just wiped away your stress for a while? Instead, life is momentarily replaced with laughter and memories.  This is what happened when my roommate from college (and no, I will not mention the year…) came to visit, and we decided to make it a “Starr” weekend.

It started with a search for the perfect happy hour.  If you didn’t already know, Route 6 (about to celebrate a one-year anniversary) has amazing happy hour specials that are both fresh and delicious. From 4:30 to 6:30 PM, you can find about 10 bites for under $10.  I particularly enjoyed the buck-a-shuck oysters while my friend tried the crispy homemade chips. Perhaps more importantly are the drink specials, but beware of “Black-Eyed Susan.”  We were warned by our remarkable waiter, Mark, but we accepted his challenge!  This drink is an adult “slushy” that sure packs a punch. After happy hour, the impeccable service and boathouse ambiance convinced us to stay and see what else Route 6 had to offer.

We decided on sharing an appetizer and salad – both had nice little surprises.  We shared the crab and artichoke dip. I wanted to spice it up with homemade hot sauce, which is also to die for.  I must confess I love a good wedge (both in shoes and salads) but the star of the salad here was the delicious homemade thousand island dressing!  While inside, we completely forgot that we were in Philly due to the cozy chic yacht club ambiance.  If you want an out of town feel, this is your place. Just prepare yourself for the November weather once you head out the doors.

After a great night out we did what any sensible Philadelphian would do…..head to brunch!  Being so impressed with the hospitality and atmosphere of Route 6, we stuck with what works and went to another Starr place, Jones.  Not taking reservations gave us an excuse to grab a mimosa at the bar.  Other fabulous drink options include create your own Bloody Mary and Bellinis with fresh muddled fruit of the season.  Every plate in the menu seems to feed your soul and comfort your heart.  We started the meal with the monkey bread, and it was definitely the best choice.  The bread was warm, sweet, and decadent wrapped all in one pastry. We dined on fluffy french toast, huevos rancheros, grilled cheese and tater tots.  I can’t wait to come here over and over and try a different menu item each time!
