Reading Terminal has more to offer than just cheesesteaks, hoagies, and pretzels. Living just a few blocks away I decided to learn more about Philadelphia’s most historic farmers markets which I shop at on a weekly basis.
To help learn more I took the Taste of Philadelphia Food tour. The guide Carolyn knows more about the history of the Terminal than anyone and has great recommendations & tips when it comes to the “must try” food vendors.
The terminal and its vendors have been serving Philadelphia for over 119 years. There were 380 merchants in the first year of operations, and the market had nearly full occupancy for the following 60 years. National chains are not allowed and there are approximately 100 vendors today.
The Reading Terminal Market occupies the ground floor of the former train station, now part of the Philadelphia Convention Center at 12th and Arch.
Here are some of my personal favorite places you must check out:
- The oldest stand in Reading Terminal is Bassett’s Ice Cream. It’s the only original stand that has existed since 1983 and is currently owned by a 5th generation family member. You must try the ice cream here!
- Iovine Brothers Produce is where I get my produce is has fresh vegetable and fruit and best prices in the city!
- DiNic’s Roast Pork and Beef has been serving Roast Beef since 1954 and opened its Reading Terminal location in 1980. They know how to make a good sandwich!
- Flying Monkey Bakery is known for quality and cost-effective sweets! Known for their cupcakes, they also serve Woopie Pies, Cakes, and Brownies.
- Molly Malloy’s serves 24 beers and tap and with a daily happy hour from 4-6. Fun Fact, Molly Malloy’s is owned by Vinnie & Jimmy Iovine, yes from Iovine Brother’s.
- One of my favorite places to get breakfast in Philadelphia is Down Home Diner. They are known for their fresh food from local farmers. 95% of the food comes from the Terminal.
