Here’s whats going on this week…

Monday, April 1st – Happy April Fool’s Day!

  • Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts – This year’s recurring theme starts the question “If you had a time machine…”, to which dozens of talented individuals respond through musical and orchestral concerts, historical theater shows, ensemble dance performances, lectures and exhibits, cabarets, and events for the whole family.  Check out the full list of events here.
  • “A Raisin In The Sun” – The Arden Theater’s run of the classic American drama “A Raisin In The Sun” has been extended due to popular demand to continue through Sunday, April 21st. I Tickets are $36-48, with student discount and rush tickets available.
  • 24 Hour Love Film Screening at International House Philadelphia.

 Tuesday, April 2nd

  •  Sister Act at the Academy of Music – A five-night run of the hilarious musical comedy “Sister Act” comes to Philadelphia from April 2nd to 7th at the Academy of Music.   Tickets run from $25 to $110, and rush and student tickets are also available.   • Live Mummy Conservation! – Part exhibition, and part working laboratory, a glass-enclosed conservation lab brings you right into a museum conservator’s world.   The Penn Museum invites guests to ask questions on weekdays at 11:15 am and 2:00 pm, and on weekends at 1:00 and 3:30 pm.
  • Misconduct Tavern is hosting a Happy Hour Fundraiser for “The Kevin Cain Memorial Foundation” which helps to support families effected by cancer.

Wednesday, April 3rd

  • Opening Day at The Porch – The Porch at 30th Street Station is brought out of hibernation this month, offering plenty of free events and entertainment open to the public. Come hungry on Wednesday and grab your lunch between 11:30 and 2:30 pm from one of Wednesday’s weekly lineup of gourmet lunch trucks, The Cow and the Curd, Cupcake Carnivale, Lucky Old Souls, and The Sunflower Truck Stop.
  • “Good People” – Now playing at the Walnut Street Theatre through April 28th.   Day-of-show tickets are $20 in person at the box office for students with IDs and persons under 24 years of age!

Thursday, April 4th

  • The Cinephiladelphia Film Festival – Starting Thursday, the CFF crams 40 programs into a 24-day spread at venues all around the city. To see what’s playing, check out the lineup of diverse films here, and follow along on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Cheers to Beer – Last call! If you have yet to see the “The Rise and Fall of Prohibition” exhibit at the National Constitution Center, come out for their final American Spirits event to toast the “Beer Act” of 1933, which legalized beer prior to Prohibition’s repeal.   Admission is $35 for non-members and $30 for members, and reservations are required.
  • River North Dance Chicago – Catch a performance at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts while this show is still here between April 4-6. Tickets start at $20, and are $10 for students and West Philly residents.
  • Activism & Justice: An Evening with the Inspiring Simon Deng at the National Museum of American Jewish History provides an opportunity to reflect on the Exodus narrative and Judaism’s historic commitment to social justice. Cocktail reception with Simon to follow after the 6:30 pm lecture. Tickets are $12 for the public, $8 for members, and $10 for students.

Friday, April 5th

  • Matt & Kim at the House of Blues in AC
  • Phillies’ Home Opener – April 5 brings a Firkin Fight for the Fightin’ Phils to Smokin Betty’s. Come in to watch the Phillies home opener, which starts at 4:05 pm, and vote for your favorite beer as two firkins go head-to-head with each other.
  • Vintage Garden Party and Trunk Show – As part of the First Friday festivities happening in Old City, Arcadia Boutique (819 N. 2nd Street) is holding a Vintage Garden Party and Trunk Show featuring items from two local designers: Nana Pat Project vintage clothing and New Histories Jewelry. Saturday, April 6th

  • 2013 Mütter Ball: Mad Men & Medicine – The College of Physicians of Philadelphia will turn back the clock for one of Philadelphia’s most anticipated and unique fundraisers. This year’s theme of Mad Men & Medicine promises to continue the Ball’s tradition of creative costumes and spectacular décor. Bring out your skinny ties, white gloves, plaid jackets, and cat eye glasses and party at the Mütter All proceeds benefit the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. To purchase tickets, click here.
  • The Gatsby Gala – Come as a flapper or come as you are, dress as a gangster or silent screen star. The Gatsby Gala, benefitting the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter, will be held at the Union League of Philadelphia from 7 to 11 pm. The night will include music, dancing, a silent auction and raffle.
  • 4th Annual Oyster Shucking Competition – Any professional Oyster Shuckers out there wanna try their luck at the Oyster House’s annual shucking competition? Professional and amateur shuckers welcome. The fun starts at 2 pm and there’s a $5 cover to get in.

Sunday, April 7th

  • XPN’s Big Day Out – XPN’s Big Day Out is an afternoon of beer and whiskey tasting, live music, and hobnobbing with celebrity guests of honor!
  • The Zombie Run –  The course is designed like a zombie movie set, so if you don’t “survive” the race, you’ll still have a spooky run. Dead or alive, all runners get to complete the entire course and attend the Quarantine Party afterwards where there will be a local DJ, food trucks, a zombie makeover station, photo stations to take pictures with the scariest zombies, and a merch store. Runners of all ages and experiences are welcome to join in the race as a Zombie ($25) or a Human ($45)!  The race starts at 8 am at FDR Park, and pre-registration is required.
  • Madam Saito’s Sushi Making Class – If you’ve always enjoyed eating sushi, you might consider learning to make it yourself! Madame Saito, Chef at The HeadHouse in Society Hill will teach you how to create rolls that are not only delicious, but also beautiful to look at. Look at these amazing creations below!  The class starts at 6:30 pm and is $30. Guests should come hungry and with take-home bags for leftovers!
