Ssanyu Lukoma, a 19-year-old Howard University student, created Brown Kids Read as a way to promote diverse literature among children, specifically those of color. Lacoma wanted to create a business knowing that underrepresented cultures needed a voice in society, even if that is promoted in the form of books. Ssanyu has sold over 6,000 books through online services and pop-up bookstores. Her motivations stem from a personal story and a mission to ensure every child feels represented, one book at a time!
