Women Crush Wednesday: Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie, the Australian actress and producer, has been involved with several projects this past year that have been astounding successes. Robbie began her career in soaps and TV series. After her first big role in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ in 2013, she was picked up for multiple roles. A year later, she opened her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, which, surprise surprise, is driven towards woman-focused projects! While managing her company, Margot was also starring in movies alongside Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Margot is often playing a woman of power or a strong feminist.

Some films that Margot produced through her company are other projects surrounding women’s empowerment. These include ‘I, Tonya, Birds of Prey, Promising Young Woman and Dollface.’ Each of these projects was made to highlight the struggles, lives, and obstacles women face and conquer. Margot produced and starred in ‘Birds of Prey: and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.’ This was a sequel to Suicide Squad, and Margot plays Harley Quinn in both films. Her character was very much shadowed and portrayed as corny and misogynistic. Margot decides to do the sequel, in which Harley is essentially emancipating herself from the other film and becoming an independent project as a powerful female action character. This shows that Margot strongly holds the industry and how we view women.

Possibly, Margot’s biggest role yet was released this past summer of 2023. She co-produced and starred as Barbie in Barbie. The film was created by Margot and Greta Gerwig, two women activists, to give a new perspective on Barbie today.

The movie’s marketing was through the roof leading up to the premiere, and Margot always maintained her poise during press and interviews. Many say that she truly is a real-life Barbie. She also starred in the movie, ‘Bombshell’ in 2019, which uncovered the truth about the sexual harassment women endured by the ex-CEO of Fox News.

Margot Robbie is an icon in the movie industry but is becoming more of an activist and role model for women to support and look up to with her recent endeavors. Many stars or people with influence tend to have some form of negative influence or opinion that gets shown to the public. But with Margot, it’s kind of the opposite.

She never makes a slip-up or negative comment, which makes her admirable and is why many women support her work. She uses the movie industry as an outlet to create meaningful, lasting work that promotes women in a positive light. In these films, women are the heroes, advocates, strong, and equal.
