Woman Crush Wednesday: Selena Gomez

She was once known for her acting on Disney Channel but is now known for so much more. Selena Gomez is an American singer, actor, business owner, and overall inspiration to women. Within the past few years, she has released multiple songs, a documentary, and launched her makeup brand. Throughout all of this, Selena has been dealing with a challenging condition.

In 2014 Selena was diagnosed with Lupus and in 2020 had a flare-up that altered her daily. Lupus is a condition where one’s immune system begins to strike its own tissues and organs. The most recent flare-up along with her medication caused many changes emotionally, mentally, and physically. Some side effects of the condition and its medication include fatigue, kidney problems, joint and muscle pain, weight fluctuation, and inflammation. This is only a small description of the discomfort and pain she encounters.

All of this has taken a toll on Selena’s mental health making it challenging to continue on as a celebrity. Despite it all, she has remained very open to the public about her life with Lupus but this doesn’t mean the public will all be warm and understanding. With her recent weight gain lately,  she’s received a lot of backlash on the Internet.

During a recent TikTok live show, she spoke to her supporters about her weight and some of the things she’s been going through.

When I’m taking the medication, I tend to hold a lot of water weight, and that happens very normally. When I’m off of it, I tend to kind of lose weight, I just wanted to say and encourage anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what they’re going through and no one knows the real story.”

She feels that people shouldn’t be body shamed and judged by how they look. TikTok is the main platform she uses to connect with her supporters, as she posts daily advocating for mental health and just pushing through.

These ideas have been implemented into her beauty company Rare Beauty. Gomez shared she grew up in a makeup chair and started her brand to add positivity to the beauty industry. After struggling with expectations and such high standards put on her, she wanted to create a brand that pushed for mental health and people feeling comfortable for the skin they’re in.

Two years after the launch of Rare Beauty, Gomez released her documentary My Mind and Me. Her documentary shows her life as a celebrity dealing with fame, mental health, lupus, and how she’s battling through it all. Since her documentary aired on Apple TV, the public has been supportive and has also become the biggest critic.

Despite the negative comments and obstacles Gomez has had to face, she continues to hold her head high and power through. Women all over the world look up to and support Gomez, seeing her as a true inspiration. Gomez is a wonderful role model for all women displaying the importance of mental health and loving the skin you’re in.
