It’s Hispanic Heritage Month! From September 15th – October 15th, all of America celebrates the culture, history, and heritage of Hispanic people. However, how does one celebrate? Not to worry, Philly PR Girl has 3 ways to celebrate the Hispanic culture… even if you’re not Hispanic!
1. Food
One of the best parts of the Hispanic culture is the food! Whether you’re dining in or making a homemade meal, you’ll be sure to appreciate the flavors and culture!
Dining Out:
- Mixto: An intimate experience with delicious food and drinks, make your way to Mixto on 12th and Pine!
- Parada Maimon: The kitchen at this Callowhill eatery dishes out soul-stirring Dominican food — and plenty of it. The beef patty, yellow rice with black beans, tostones, and pasteles earn high marks among ex-pats.
- Tierra Colombiana Restaurant: This long-running casual favorite in El Centro de Oro serves a delicious bounty of regional foods. Colombian arepas, Dominican mashed plantains with shrimp, and Cuban arroz con pollo with pork sausage and green olives are just a few of the many options.
- Lucha Cartel: Looking for a lowkey, laidback spot for tacos and margaritas? Head over to Old City for a rustic Luchador-themed Mexican spot!
Homemaking In:
- Bistec Encebollado (Steak and Onions): This food blog is the best place to find Puerto Rican and other Latin American food recipes! Bistec Encebollado is a great classic to start with!
- Authentic Churros: Who doesn’t like churros? Especially authentic ones… count us in!
- Mexican Arroz con Leche (Rice Pudding): Rice pudding is a classic Hispanic dessert, and it’s one you have to make at least once this month!
- Arroz Con Gandules: If you’re looking for a classic dish to pair with the Bistec Encebollado, this is it! Don’t wait, start cookin’!

2. Music
There are a ton of amazing musicians, songs, and albums from the Hispanic culture, ranging from a classic Selena to the modern J Balvin. So regardless of if you’re walking home, at work, or home cleaning, we have some of the best jams that celebrate the culture!
- Como La Flor, Selena: This is a classic from the Queen of Tejano music. If you’ve never heard this one you’re in for a classic treat.
- La Vida Es Una Carnaval, Celia Cruz: Speaking of classic, who else could be more classic than Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa?! Her music dates back to the 50’s and continues to be a hit everywhere.
- Vivir Mi Vida, Marc Anthony: This song is at every Hispanic get-together, party, and wedding for a reason. The title translates to “Live My Life” which is exactly what you should be doing!
- Del Mar, Ozuna ft. Doja Cat and Sia: Moving into more a more modern era, Del Mar has fun and tropical vibe that is sure to get you moving!
- Agua, J Balvin: You’ll hear a familiar tone in this one and that’s because it was featured in the Spongebob movie. But don’t be wary about it, because we can guarantee you’ll love this high energy jam
- Boogaloo Supreme, Victor Manuelle: This one is another really fun song that you won’t be able to help put on repeat!
3. Dancing
What better way to celebrate than to go DANCING, and we at Philly PR Girl love to dance! If you’re looking for a place to get your Hispanic dance on, look no further.
- Cuba Libre: The open-air setting, tropical ambiance, vintage décor, upbeat Latin music is a whole experience here! With different theme nights, you’re sure to have a blast!
- Brasil’s Nightclub: Whether you’re looking for a salsa lesson or you want to have a whole night on the dancefloor, Brasil’s is the place to be!
- Tierra Nightclub: If you’re looking for a Latin fusion style of music, a fun atmosphere and a great setting, Tierra is your spot! If you’re looking to amplify your night, add bottle service!
