Instagram Reels vs. TikTok

Instagram has stepped up its game with their recent launch of “IG Reels”, similar to the TikTok platform. Instagram users now get the best of both worlds, being able to create “TikTok like” content in addition to their regular Instagram feed posting. While IG Reels and TikTok have their similarities, there are key differences to keep in mind, as well. Philly PR Girl has everything to know about Instagram Reels and TikTok!

What are they?

  • IG Reels – A way to record and edit 15-30 second video clips to share with your followers! One can create their own content or upload pre-recorded videos. IG Reels gives the user the option to share it to both the Instagram feed, and the “IG Reels” feed for more exposure and interaction.
  • TikTok – A social media platform where users can create and share videos up to 60 seconds long! TikTok has rapidly grown over the past few years, and the number of users keeps getting higher. This is a great opportunity to grow your following and be seen by a large community!
  • Both platforms offer a music selection for videos, along with the option to use original audio. Take note, however, that TikTok currently offers users more editing features and options.

Which is better to post on?

  • In terms of building relations and a community within your following base, TikTok has proven to be more effective. The average comments and likes are higher on TikTok than they are on IG Reels.
  • That being said, everyone’s following base is different, so TikTok might be better for some and IG Reels may be better for others. But you can never go wrong with utilizing both to their fullest potential!

How can I get the most exposure?

  • For most, the goal is to try and get the most out of the social media platforms they are using. Instagram and TikTok both have different algorithms, which is why some people post their TikToks to their IG Reels.
  • TikTok – Videos that are using trending sounds and hashtags have the chance of getting more views than other videos. The TikTok “For You Page” (FYP) is strategically made based on the user’s content, as well as their engagement with other videos.
  • IG Reel – The IG Reel algorithm isn’t as clear as TikTok’s. For TikTok using trending sounds almost guarantees your video will get a decent exposure, but for Instagram Reels it’s a little bit different. For your Instagram Reel to perform well, you have to take time and look at other Reels in your niche that are performing well, and mimic those tactics. This could be a particular song, or a style of video.
