Black History Month: Philly Music

The definition of creativity is the use of imagination or original ideas. In what way do you put your best thought forward? For a writer, it’s a pen to paper. For a musician, it’s their voice to a mic or platform. For a painter, it’s their brush to a canvas. But for a creative or creator, it’s anything they put their mind to. The streets of Philadelphia are flooded with endless talent, both established and upcoming. There is no limit as to what you can’t do and no excuse for why you can’t do it.

Over the course of the month we touched on Black fashion, food, and events in Philly, but what would it be without the music? What would music be without the influence of Black culture? With that being said, the culture is here to stay and so are the people.

Here are some of the best DJ’s from and even in the Philadelphia area:

DJ Diamond Kutz: You can find her on your favorite morning show, Power 99, getting you ready to go to work, the gym, or even to take your kids to school. Prior to her big break in music, she created mixtapes for people of Philadelphia who would line up just to get her mixes. This full-circle moment has only come to fruition when she became the first and only female DJ to have a slot on Philadelphia’s favorite radio station.

Cosmic Kev: Cosmic Kev is one of Power 99’s DJs here in Philadelphia. His continuous mixes on a late-night will make you want to keep the radio going. By keeping the beats, rhythm, and rhymes flowing, he takes the time to play exclusive tracks by the hottest artists in Philly, Jersey, and Delaware. You can listen to Cosmic on Philly’s #1 radio station, Power 99 FM.

DJ Jazzy Jeff: You may recognize DJ Jazzy Jeff from one of the best critically acclaimed TV shows, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Born and raised in West Philadelphia, Jeff developed a love for music at the age of 10 years old. Since then, his talents had grown and wowed the world with his flawless skills on the turntables. Jeff’s love for music has led him all over the world to share his gift with others. At this rate, there is no slowing down so turn on your radio and be ready to go on a musical journey.

Questlove: Questlove is a New York Times bestselling author, entrepreneur, and drummer that has had a great influence on hip-hop culture. You might recognize Quest from Philadelphia’s soulful band, The Roots. However, Quest is no stranger to the entertainment industry. With his mother being an entertainer and his father being a singer, Quest was destined to be great with the influence of his parents. Making this a full-circle moment, The Roots has been seen on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon weeknights at 11:30 pm. Be ready to get your groove on!
