How to Cool Off Near Philly Without A Pool

Summertime in the city can be known for rooftop pool parties and starlit beer gardens. Though oftentimes, we need a change of scenery. With record high temperatures in July, many Philadelphians wondered how they could escape the heat without going to a public pool. Here’s a round-up of our favorite off-the-map outdoor spots outside the city.

Wissahickon Valley Park

Tucked on the west side of the city, the Wissahickon Creek is right in city’s backyard. It’s home of the notorious Devil’s Pool. Don’t let the name scare you, bring snacks and a bluetooth speaker to enjoy a perfect afternoon in the shade. We recommend that daring hikers park their cars on Henry Avenue and hike to the water. This will avoid parking tickets along the trail. Once you’re there, the cliffs and waterfall are popular spots for spontaneous jumps and day-long swimming.

Schuylkill River

The Schuylkill River runs right through Philadelphia, but it stretches 128 miles to Coal County. This historical landmark offers everything from fishing, mountain biking, paddling, tubing and camping. Nearby the city, head to Schuylkill Banks, Manayunk, and other nearby access points to enjoy the most of this waterway.

Bellmawr Lake

This New Jersey lake offers an affordable swimming option for the duration of the summer. From morning to night by the water, you can choose to leisurely swim or stay active with beach volleyball. Not to mention, this spot has a 100 ft. water slide to satisfy your inner child. For adults, there’s a full beach bar to relax at.

Bucks County River Country

This family favorite is one of the best places to go tubing in Pennsylvania. Only 30 minutes from the city, you can easily spend a relaxing day floating between Pennsylvania to New Jersey. Stop for a bite to eat at the Red Mushroom Cafe, where you can save time by pre-ordering. Don’t forget to look at the daily deals online for your next tubing or kayaking adventure.

Delaware River Tubing

If you’re looking for something on the New Jersey side, visit Delaware River Tubing in Milford, NJ. Known for their awesome river tubing, this destination also offers rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. Part of their charm is the free BBQ meal included with your ticket at the floating food stand, The Famous River Hot Dog Man. No matter your activity, there’s endless fun in store for you here!

Fortunately, these natural beauties are within driving distance of Center City. If swimming in creek and lakes isn’t for you, there are also lots of nearby trails for hiking and bike riding. Open meadows and picnic benches near parks also make these ideal spots for families and friends to escape the city without a far commute. They’re all guaranteed to keep you outdoors all summer long!
