On Wednesday, June 13, Greensgrow Farm in Kensington transformed from an urban farm and garden center into a lively benefit party. This annual A Taste of Kensington celebration was created to build support for their Greensgrow Community Kitchen. Since 2011, the Greensgrow Community Kitchen has help over 75 local food visionaries turn their dreams into reality.
The party, appropriately named, featured signature dishes and farm-to-table hors d’oeuvres from prominent Kensington culinary figures and Greensgrow Community Kitchen. Guests grazed food stations and sampled dishes from Cheu Fishtown, Memphis Taproom, Good Spoon Soupery, and more, including a head to tail BBQ from the team at Standard Tap and Johnny Brenda.
Philadelphia Brewing Co. kept the beer and cider flowing alongside the signature cocktail. Earning the name from Ping, the duck who lives on the Greensgrow grounds;“Ping’s Strawberry Buck” was an easy-drinking summer cocktail. Made with Rowhouse Spirits gin, the drink also incorporated fresh Greensgrow mint and local strawberries.
There was no shortage of entertainment at “A Taste of Kensington.” Guests enjoyed a craft cocktail demonstration from Martha’s head bartender, Mike Landers. In addition, Fette Sau’s Executive Chef, Reinaldo Alfonso, hosted a live cooking demonstration. The silent auction table featured amazing prizes, such as stays at the Lokal Hotel and dinner at award-winning Fork Restaurant. No party is complete without music, and PJ Brown & Her Resistance had the crowd dancing and singing all night long.
The proceeds from the evening will directly impact and support Greensgrow Community Kitchen. Today, the kitchen serves as a non-sectarian business incubator. It’s also a demonstration kitchen for community members to learn canning, fermenting, bread baking, and more. Of course, it is where the Greensgrow Made line of prepared foods is made. Food entrepreneurs rent it out for use as well.
