Women’s History Month #WCW | Julie Hancher

In honor of Women’s History Month, our annual #WCW series returns. We’re so excited to celebrate the incredibly talented and successful women of Philadelphia. Each week, we’ll be featuring incredible women that inspire us. This week, we’re starting with Julie Hancher! She’s the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the power blog, Green Philly.

Although Hancher’s been writing novels since the 4th grade, she never imagined she’d be a blogger. She got her start because her employer at the time took away the office recycling bins and throwing everything into the trash. This sparked something in Hancher, which became Green Philly Blog. Nine years later, she uses this platform to help people live a more eco-friendly lifestyle and grow the sustainability community through events.

Pollution and waste is as much of an issue in Philadelphia as it is a worldwide, so she wanted to shed light on every aspect of it that’s happening right here in the city. Hancher founded Philadelphia’s annual sustainability awards, SustainPHL, and panel discussions to empower the sustainability community. The event supports local businesses, champions changemakers, and promotes the welfare of a healthy sustainable city.

“Sustainability is one of those things where everything is gradual. Changing the mindset of people just doesn’t happen overnight. I think it does take ‘baby steps’ in some regard because it’s a more approachable way to do things,” said Hancher. She recommends reading up on eco blogs (maybe starting with Green Philly to find out how to make a local impact) and finding different resources to help people any way possible. According to Hancher, the future looks bright.

Not only is she a sustainability expert, Hancher is also a social media marketing maven, freelancer, writer, and speaker. She’s been quoted in Philadelphia Magazine, She Knows, CNN, Metro and MNN.

When she’s doing all of that, you can find Hancher biking, trying new recipes, or out on the town with her friends. Traveling is also a huge passion of hers. She’s been across the globe, exploring a new urban jungles, trying local cuisine, and enjoying the true beauty of nature.

Follow Julie Hancher through her Green Philly Blog or social media on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
