Here’s What’s Going On This Week in Philly…

Monday, June 29

  • Enjoy free general admission to the Franklin Institute all day courtesy of Wawa, for the annual multi-day Wawa Welcome America! Festival. With book readings led by Mayor Michael Nutter, a live science show about the science of fireworks, and more, it’s going to be a day to remember at the Franklin Institute!
  • Its Emoji Monday at Citizens Bank Park when the Phillies play the Brewers! The first 500 purchasers of the $30 package will score a game ticket on the scoreboard porch with $12 worth of concession credit, and a coupon for a free Phillies Emoji T-shirt. The game starts at 7:05 and tickets can be purchased here (enter the password “EMOJI”!).
  • Keep the Wawa Welcome America celebrations going with a free screening of Disney’s Big Hero 6 at Franklin Square. The family-friendly film begins at 7 p.m., and Franklin Square is located at 200 6th Street.
  • For a movie suited to the 21+ crowd, head to The Trocadero Theater for a screening of Fight Club for only a $3 admission price, which also goes toward a drink or snack! Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film begins at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, June 30

  • Learn more about the City of Brotherly Love at the Philadelphia History Museum with free admission, as part of Wawa Welcome America 2015. With special readings and book giveaways, you won’t want to miss this opportunity for free learning. Museum hours are from 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Head to Dilworth Park for the next installment of the free Pictures in the Park series. Tonight’s film is Annie (2014) and it begins at 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, July 1

  • Today you get free admission to the African American Museum, courtesy of Wawa Welcome America 2015! From 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., learn about African American history in the U.S. in the first institution built by a major North American city to house and interpret the life and work of African Americans.
  • The Order of Things, with three large-scale installations, is an exhibit at the Barnes Foundation you won’t want to miss. The exhibit is a response to the unconventional way that Albert C. Barnes chose to display his collections, and explains the philosophy behind the ensembles and their importance in the history of museum practice. The Barnes’ exhibition hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and tickets can be purchased here.
  • After the Phillies take on the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park, stick around for the ultimate fireworks show immediately following the game featuring the Philadelphia Orchestra! The game starts at 7:05 p.m., and tickets can be purchased here.
  • Catch the must-see Philadelphia movie with one of the most iconic Philly film scenes at the Philadelphia Museum of Art: Rocky! The free screening will begin around 9 p.m., as part of the Wawa Welcome America Philly @ The Movies series.

Thursday, July 2

  • Join the National Constitution Center for a day of free admission, courtesy of Wawa Welcome America. With extended hours from 9:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. and different patriotic activities all day long, this is a must-attend event for this week’s celebrations! For tickets, call 215-409-6700.
  • Finally, the day we’ve all been waiting for: Wawa Hoagie Day! Head down to Independence Mall outside the Independence Visitor Center starting at noon to grab a free Wawa hoagie.
  • Watch the Philadelphia Orchestra perform live for free at the picturesque Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing. The concert begins at 8 p.m., and it will be followed by a land-side fireworks display.
  • See The Sixth Sense at Rittenhouse Square for the last free screening of the Philly @ The Movies series as part of Wawa Welcome America. The classic supernatural thriller, filmed in parts of Philadelphia, will begin at 9 p.m.

Friday, July 3

  • Explore the city’s diverse food scene and some of its finest live entertainment at the Liberty Block Party, the largest block party of the summer! The block party will be at 5th and 6th Streets between Market and Chestnut Streets, and from 1 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Grab your lawn chairs and blankets and settle in at Independence Hall for POPS! On Independence, a free concert that has become one of Philadelphia’s most popular Fourth of July traditions. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at the steps of Independence Hall at 6th and Chestnut Streets.
  • Shop the apparel, scarf, and jewelry collections from Supra Endura at their trunk show at the US*U.S. boutique. Supra Endura will be featuring their beautiful new summer styles at the boutique that showcases local Philadelphia designers. The event is from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at 323 Arch Street.

Saturday, July 4

  • Start Independence Day off with a bang at the Independence Day Parade! Beginning at Independence Hall and winding through historic Philadelphia, you’ll have a blast watching the dozens of floats, marching bands, antique cars, and so much more! The parade begins at 10 a.m., and click here for the route.
  • After getting your patriotism on at the Independence Day Parade, make your way to Eakins Oval at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for Party on the Parkway. From 12 p.m. – 7 p.m., the Parkway will be packed with blocks of delicious refreshments from vendors and local food trucks, interactive fun, and more!
  • End Independence Day in Philly on a high note at the Philly 4th of July Jam, featuring the Roots and special guests including Miguel, and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland before an explosive fireworks finale over the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The concert begins at 7 p.m., and the fireworks will begin around 10:30 p.m., immediately following the concert.

Sunday, July 5

  • Get your brunch on every Sunday at the Stratus Rooftop Lounge for their Elevated Brunch with a Twist. Beginning at 1 p.m., enjoy an interactive prix fixe food and cocktail menu with live entertainment. For reservations, call 215-925-2889.
  • Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and spectacle of Longwood Gardens after dark for Nightscape: A Light and Sound Experience by Klip Collective at the historic gardens. Running through October 31, the Nightscape experience will begin at 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays in July (with different start times for the following months).
