Philadelphia’s homegrown band, The Roots, has been making waves in the hip-hop and neo-soul scenes since 1987, and they started hosting the Picnic concerts series in 2007. Every year The Roots Picnic kicks off the summer festival season, and this year is no exception. Held at the revamped Festival Pier, The Roots have brought a stellar lineup of diverse acts. This year’s event includes supporting acts like Janelle Monáe, A$AP Ferg, Jhené Aiko and friend to Philly PR Girl , Chill Moody. (check out our friend on the front page of the Metro today!) This year’s headliner is the incomparable Snoop Dogg!
For the frequent concert goer you will notice some changes this year at the Festival Pier. The new Festival Pier has a menu from Sapman owner, Michael Schulson, that features classics like mac n’ cheese, cheese dogs and strawberry shortcake. Wash it all down at the Pier’s new beer garden with local brews. The most exciting part is there is a beach in the middle that comes complete with boardwalk and sand dunes.
If you didn’t grab a ticket to the sold-out show, you can see The Roots as they work with Dave Chappelle to resurrect the Brooklyn Block Party at Radio City Music Hall in June. The Block Party features stand up comedy next to music performances that will be kicked off by The Roots. The lineup also include Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu and Janelle Monáe.
