Philly Romance in the Fall

There’s something about autumn that makes for a few romantic months out of the year. Maybe it’s the crisp, cool air; the heightening of the senses with all the festive sights, smells, and sounds; or possibly it’s to do with the ever-present reminders that the holidays are quickly approaching.  Whatever the reason, Philly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to offerings. Here are a few ideas for generating a little romance in the upcoming weeks.

For the Foodies:

Treat them to dinner at Marcie Turney’s newest Midtown establishment. Recently opened in September, Little Nonna’s has received fine reviews for Chef Aaron Sheppard’s take on Italian-American comfort cuisine. The space is dim-lit and intimate, so it makes for a great first date where you and your new “friend” can get well acquainted over the sweet aroma of handmade pasta and a nice bottle of red.

For the Romantics:

Take them out to see a dazzling ballet show at the Academy of Music. The Pennsylvania Ballet is premiering five performances of “Jewels,” choreographed by the Father of American Ballet, George Balanchine. The piece was inspired by the artistry of jewelry designer Claude Arpels, and each movement, named for a specific jewel, has its own mood and music, from a sultry jazz-like Stravinsky to the opulent Tchaikovsky.

For the Sports Fans:

Enjoy a hockey game at Wells Fargo without paying the premium price when The University of Vermont plays Penn State. The match starts at 5 pm on October 26, and tickets range from $10-40. If you’d prefer to show your support for the Flyers, join the Flyers Charities Halloween 5k or 1-mile walk at 9 am the same day! From serious athletes to young families, all are welcome to pull on their Halloween costumes and participate for $35 (5k) or $25 (mile) registration fee.

 For the Curious Types:

Unleash your inner archaeologist while exploring “Dinosaurs Unearthed,” a brand new exhibit opened this week at the Academy of Natural Science. More than a dozen realistic, full-bodied dinosaurs are on display – including a velociraptor and T-rex – plus skeletons, fossil casts, and an Oviraptor egg. The best part? This interactive exhibit costs only $5 for non-members, and will be open until next March.

For the Quiet Types:

Save the conversation for after you’ve shared a few laughs together while watching The N Crowd’s weekly improv show at The Actor’s Center. Each Friday, this troupe gathers in Old City to put on a brand new, never-been-practiced routine that has been described as “the best 80 minutes of entertainment that $12 can legally buy.”

For the Cinephiles:

Trade your typical movie night in for a special double feature showing at Eakins Oval my the art museum. The Awesome Fest has created Philly’s first-ever drive-in movie theater, a temporary series taking place each Friday from October 18 through November 22nd at 7:30 pm. Classic cinema like Grease and King Kong vs. Godzilla will be playing first, followed by more contemporary blockbusters like Pacific Rim and Big Ass Spider! It’s $20 per car and free to pedestrians and cyclists. An added bonus: food trucks will be nearby for some seriously tasty bites.
