The Gold Medal of Pizza

This year was South Philly Review’s 5th Pizza Olympics.  With so many pizza places in Philadelphia, sometimes it’s hard to decide where to spend your daily recommended value of carbs and cheesy saturated fat goodness.  This event was perfect for discovering some true gems in town.

Our favorite of the night was a super creative and flavorful General Tso’s chicken pizza from Paulie’s Pizza.  At first, it looks a little intimidating with big chunks of chicken and lots of broccoli.  Though those that went for it were not disappointed.  As far as classics go, SliCE’s margherita pizza had the best tomato sauce that put it at the top of our list.

Other top contenders were J&J Pizza’s chicken caesar salad pizza, Rosario Pizzeria’s pico de gallo pizza topped with avocado, and Lanci’s Bakery for their delicious bread.  Thanks to Utz, Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews, and Honest Tea for providing other delicious snacks and beverages.

And finally, here’s what you’ve been waiting for… drumroll, please.  The gold medalist of this year’s Best Overall Pizza is: SliCE!! Silver went to Paulie’s Pizza, and Rosario’s Pizzeria claimed the bronze medal.  Check out the winners in specific categories here.
