One of the most iconic stage performances ever put on Broadway has decided to sashay its way into Philadelphia! Kinky Boots is an original breath of fresh air that joins generations together with its messages of friendship, acceptance, and just plain fun.

Prolific musical legend Cyndi Lauper has truly outdone herself in creating the music throughout the show. The Grammy winner was even given a Tony Award for the show’s composition and song lyrics. The fabulous music, merged together with the genius directing and choreography by two-time Tony winner Jerry Mitchell, makes for an unforgettable experience.

Kinky Boots is based on a book inspired by true events, written by the sensational four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein. The story follows Charlie Price on his quest to save his late father’s rundown shoe factory in Northampton, England. When he has just about given up all hope, he meets the enigmatic Lola, a drag queen with sass for days! With a little help from his friends, Charlie decides that making women’s shoes for men will be the Holy Grail in saving his family business. Under the supervision of Charlie and Lola, the gang begins production on Kinky Boots that will be shown on the catwalks of Milan. However, it’s not all fun and games as we look deeper into the psyche of our characters. Together, they make it through and learn to be accepting of not just people who appear different but also any and everyone around us.

This performance of Kinky Boots was nothing short of spectacular, and will undoubtedly be one of the biggest hits in Philly this season. The energy throughout the intimate setting at the Forrest Theatre was electric! J. Harrison Ghee, who portrayed Lola, is a force to be reckoned with. His performances of “Land of Lola,” “Sex Is in The Heel,” and the show stopping, emotional, “Hold Me in Your Heart” gave me constant goose bumps! Never for one second will you think that he was merely playing a part – he absolutely IS Lola, and delivers his performance flawlessly. We mustn’t forget about Lola’s Angels! Those six marvelous men in drag were definitely kinky and on point all night!

To describe the finale of the show as “showstopping” would be an understatement. The execution of the song “Raise You Up” by the full company had everyone in the theater on their feet dancing along! All of the actors, especially all of the men in heels, were impressively and effortlessly in sync with the choreography.

After the show, patrons had the opportunity to speak with Damien Brett, a member of the ensemble cast who was enjoying his first time here in Philadelphia. It was obvious that he felt so incredibly lucky to be a part of such an amazing show. He shared with us the pride he feels daily to be a part of the first national tour of Kinky Boots, stating, “As I zip up my boots each night, I think, wow… this is really my job”!

So, “Ladies and Gentlemen… and those who are yet to make up your mind,” you must go see this production of Kinky Boots! It is only available here in Philadelphia until May 10th at The Forrest Theatre.
