This Week in Philly

New TWIP Banner

To our loyal readers:

This is our 100th This Week in Philly post!  This roundup of awesome events in the city is the reason why I started Philly PR Girl blog in the first place, and it has become the backbone of the blog.  It takes a lot of work, but we enjoy putting it together for you and letting you know our favorite events each week.  In this week’s installment, you’ll get a little sneak peak into what goes into putting this together each week and why we pick some events.

xoxo Kate

Monday, September 9th

As die hard Eagles fans, we will always promote games and Eagles related events.  We bleed green here at Philly PR Girl!  One of the things we’ve often promoted since the beginning of TWiP is the Monday night movie at the Troc.  Now a lot of places have events like this, but in our opinion the Troc was one of the firsts.

  • E-A-G-L-E-S! – The Eagles play the Redskins in Washington for their first game of the season, starting at 7:10 pm.
  • Monday Night Movie at the Troc: Airplane!
  • Spiritualized at Union Transfer – The legendary space rock heroes will be performing at Union Transfer at 8:30 pm. For just $22, you won’t want to miss these “prescription-grade, blissed-out psych-rock-gospel-blues”, with Guy Blakeslee from Entrance Band opening.
  • Ocean Prime opening – 15th and Sansom is the newest location for this heralded seafood supper club, first started in Columbus, Ohio in 2006.

Tuesday, September 10th

As you can see we promote really diverse events.  From global events to political to foodie events….We try to cover it all.

  •  GP13* International Architecture Panel – Italian Professionals in Philadelphia and the Italian Consulate of Philadelphia host world-class architects Peter Bohlin and Paolo Desideri to lead a discussion for students and hobbyists of architecture in “Architecture and Identity” from 6 to 8 pm at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia.
  • Winemaker Dinner Series at R2L – 4 courses paired with 5 wines from Honig Vineyard and Winery for $130 per person. 6 pm meet and greet with owner Michael Honig; dinner starts at 6:30 featuring vineyard exclusives not available anywhere else.
  • Geno’s Steaks will mark its 47th anniversary on Tuesday, Sept. 10 by selling cheesesteaks from noon to 2 p.m. for 50 cents each.
  • 2013 Liberty Medal – This year, the National Constitution Center’s Liberty Medal will be presented to Hillary Rodham Clinton in recognition of her lifelong career in public service and advocacy for women and girls across the globe. Ceremony begins at 7 pm and will be broadcast live on WPVI-TV/6abc and 6abc.com.

Wednesday, September 11th

Like most Americans, I will never forget 9/11/01.  I have a special connection to this day and just like many people it’s a day that will be ingrained in my life forever.   If you are not attending an event in Philly, take a road trip up to NYC and visit the Memorial.

  •  In The Heights – The Walnut Street Theatre’s first show of the season is a Tony Award-winning musical about a community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood on the brink of change. What traditions do you take with you, and which ones do you leave behind? Playing now through October 20, tickets are $65-75 and $20 at the door anyone under 24.
  • The Highwater Preachers / Nate Skiles Band – Check out Four Corners’ newest 21+ music venue, Boot & Saddle, managed by the R5 team. Tickets are $8; doors open at 8, the show starts at 9.

Thursday, September 12th

Even though we try to cover diverse events, we know we are heavy on fashion and food.  We can’t help it…our team is made up of women!

  • Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll – From 5:30 to 8:30, walk along 43rd to 51st streets with a couple of bucks to spend on food and drinks, theater tickets, $1 passes to yoga and studio classes, and more.
  • Martha’s Singles Mingle – Peddler’s Village EBC Lounge hosts a singles mixer the second Thursday each month with flirting, trivia games, prizes and giveaways. Cash bar with complimentary apps, event goes from 6 to 9.
  •  Girls Night Out – Ann Taylor LOFT in King of Prussia is offering shoppers 20% off their entire purchase from 6 to 8 pm.

Friday, September 13th

Festivals, expos, block parties… Philly has A LOT of them and the Philly PR Girl team tries to go to them all!  From Philly Fringe Festival, Global Philly, Oktoberfest, Fashion Week, Charity Walks, and Restaurant Week (just to name a few), September is a busy month!

  • Friday the 13th Summer Camp Sleepover – The Awesome Fest hosts an overnight horror film festival for 21+ outdoors in the woods of Bensalem. Begins at 4 pm, grab your tickets now!
  • Urban Defense Center Anniversary – Northern Liberties’ martial arts school celebrates 11 years at Morgan’s Pier starting at 7 pm. Dress to impress, grab some drinks, and find out more about why Master Lawrence Whitaker’s training center is one of the top in the region.

Saturday, September 14th

Charity events are very important to us.  We often help out local charities by promoting their events on TWiP and some times we are hired to do PR and Social Media for a charity-related event.  Giving back is important to the Philly PR Girl team.

  •  Parts: A Speed-Through – The Drexel Players’ second Fringe Festival show following last year’s highly immersive experimental piece, MONUMENT. “Parts” acts as a slightly skewed self-portrait of the group of Drexel students and alumni while working behind the scenes on a fictional performance. Tickets are $7 at the door or online.
  •  The Young Professionals Ball – The region’s longest running annual party for professionals in their 20s and 30s is at the North Shore Beach Club from 8:30 pm to 2 am.
  •  7th Annual Beer Fest and BBQ at the Ballpark – Sample 50 beers from 30 craft breweries and enjoy ballpark food at McFadden’s from 2 to 8 pm. Live bands and DJs will perform while the game plays on the big screen. The event is in support of The Barkann Healing Hearts Foundation.
  • Rally for the Rail Park – Philly wants an elevated park in the sky but needs your help to build it.  The block party, in conjunction with the Fringe Festival, is from 5pm to 11pm.  For more info click here.

Sunday, September 15th

Restaurant Week is starting today, which made me think about ALL the restaurants we have promoted these past 100 TWiP posts.  We are lucky to live in a city full of amazing, family-owned restaurants.

  • Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon – Rock out to local bands while running down the Parkway.
  • Mexican Independence Day Festival – Celebrate the holiday with music, food, dancing, arts and crafts, face painting, Mexican rock bands and more. Organized by the Mexican Cultural Center, the festival takes place from 1 to 7 pm at Penn’s Landing.
  •  Restaurant Week – Sunday marks the first day in Center City’s 10th year of Restaurant Week! Participating restaurants will offer $20 three-course lunches and $35 three-course dinners from the 15th through 20th and 22nd through 27th. Read through some of our reviews and recommendations.
  •  Stars and Garters – Busts & Trunks, the Burlesque division of Ocelot on a Leash Theater Company, brings a Doctor Who burlesque show to the Trestle Inn from the 15-17th. Great for new-to-Who and hardcore-Whovians, but be warned the show includes “spoilers” through Season 6.
