Here’s our list of must attend events this week…

Monday, August 12th

  • Collaboration Dinner – Prime Stache and Han Dynasty collab on two separate, decadent 7-course meals for $50 a pop. Prime Stache’s dinner begins at 6 p.m.; Han Dynasty, at 9. $10 of each ticket will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House and Take Flight Foundation.
  • Sixteen Candles screening – The classic 80’s film is playing (for free!) at The Trocadero as part of the ongoing Awesome Fest.

Tuesday, August 13th

  • Legends of Summer Tour – What’s bigger than Beyonce’s recent performance in Philly? A double billing of Jay Z and Justin Timberlake at Citizen’s Bank Park!  (In case you can’t make it, Philly PR Girl will be there and will provide you a full recap on the show!)
  • Fun at The Oval – Have you been to the revamped Eakins Oval on the Parkway yet? Programming is free during the summer and includes food trucks, musical performances, and other activities. Tuesdays’ theme is “wellness”, but the Oval is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, ending on August 18th.

Wednesday, August 14th

  • Lunch Break at The Porch – Spend your lunch hour at The Porch at 30th Street beginning at noon to enjoy rhythmic Latin Jazz music from Artistas y Musicos Latino Americanos, and picking up fresh veggies and produce from the Farmer’s Market.
  • Ratchet Open Bar Wednesdays – $15 cover, open bar at Tabu Lounge & Sports Bar! Join in at the Gayborhood’s hottest weekly dance party.
  • CARNIVAL OF MADNESS TOUR FEATURING SHINEDOWN with Skillet, In This Moment, Sevendust, We As Human at the Mann!

Thursday, August 15th

  • Happy 2nd Anniversary to MilkBoy Philly! Celebrate all weekend Aug 15-17 with free live music, free bites from the kitchen, & $2 drink specials!
  • Screenings Under the Stars – Penn’s Landing presents a free screening “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” (PG-13), beginning at sundown!
  • ART/GAGE – The Food Trust’s 6th annual Night Market Philadelphia will curate over a dozen artistic and performance-based art experiences at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens on South Street from 6 to 10 p.m. Over 80 food and drink vendors will be present while visitors go on guided mini-tours of the space and behind-the scenes access; plus, guests can create their own tiles to take home!

Friday, August 16th

  • Do Good Fest: An event to fight Philly Hunger at Hard Rock Cafe Philly.  Performers include Chill Moody, Kuf Knotz, Market East, Juston Stens & The Get Real Gang, Greg Sover, Big Terrible.  – Great music for a great cause!
  • Jay Pharoah at Helium Comedy Club – This SNL impressionist is playing a 5-show engagement in Philly this weekend. Tickets are $27 – 34.
  • Philadelphia Folk Festival – The Philadelphia Folk Festival’s 52nd year of live folk music takes place August 16-18 at the Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township with another incredible lineup of artists. “Godfather of Philadelphia Folk Music”, WXPN-FM DJ Gene Shay, will be hosting the festival for his 52nd consecutive year. Buy your tickets online or at the gate!
  • Backstreet Boys: In a World Like This Tour – Backstreet’s back, alright! Playing at the Susquehanna Bank Center with Jesse McCartney and DJ Pauly D.

Saturday, August 17th

  • The Life and Times of Omar Ibn Sayyid – A one-act play on the life of African Muslim teacher and scholar from Futa Torro (modern Senegal). Sayyid was enslaved and brought to South Carolina in the early 1800s and remained in bondage for the rest of his life, yet created records of acclaimed history and theology while captive. Free with admission to the African American Museum of Philadelphia ($14 for adults, $10 for students and seniors).
  • The Philly R&B Fashion Show – This charity event held at Northeast Stagesound and Studios features the area’s up and coming fashion designers and R&B music artists. Bring your clean, unwanted clothes to be donated to local shelters, and come wearing your best!
  • Sergei Parajanov, Surrealist Poet of Soviet Cinema – The International House screens Parajanov’s last film, “Ashik Kerib”, a retelling of a popular romantic myth in Azerbaijani, in which music and color play an important role. Tickets are only $9 with a $2 discount for students with ID. If you can’t make the 5 p.m. show, four other films directed by Parajanov are screening from the 14th through the 17th.

Sunday, August 18th

  • Happening 2 – White Pines Productions presents ensembles from New Paradise Laboratories (Philly), Banana Peel Dance (NYC), and NEW NOISE (New Orleans) in a showcase of their summer residency works at Underground Arts.
  • Event Horizon Jazz Trio at National Mechanics – Celebrate Event Horizon’s album release party from 7 to 10 with a free performance from the group!
  • 27th Philadelphia Caribbean Festival – From noon to 8 p.m., Penn’s Landing will be host to a celebration of 14 Caribbean islands in a day of family fun that includes musical performances of reggae, roots international beat, hip-hop and gospel, island skits, dance, poetry, and steel band. A marketplace of Caribbean fashions, arts, and crafts will be supplemented with a children’s corner which includes a village enactment and maypole dancing.
