Welcome to the 2nd installment of our First Friday Interview Series.  Now in its twelfth season, Project Runway is giving Philadelphia’s fashion industry a nod with a local on set: Dom Streater. The show’s season debut aired on July 18th, and our girl is still playing hard through the third episode, where she designed one of the top dresses alongside partner Alexandria in a Coney-Island-froyo-inspired challenge yielding a playful Harajuku style dress.  We got a chance to ask our contender what you need to know about her.

Philly PR Girl: Tell us about your background in school, work, and fashion.

Dom Streater: I was born and raised in the city of Philadelphia and went to college here as well. I earned my Bachelors in Fashion Design from Moore College of Art and Design. Throughout school I interned at a popular men’s lifestyle and fashion magazine called Complex, which is owned by Marc Ecko. I loved working there because seeing the editorial side of fashion really changes your perspective on what you design. In a way, it challenges you to be less conservative about what you design. After graduating I did one more internship at a cycling accessory company here in Philly called Fabric Horse. It was a great experience because not only do I love cycling, but I was very much involved with all of the production of the small company. Although I haven’t had a chance to work in the industry full time yet, I loved all the experience I have gained so far because I’ve gained a completely different perspective than most other designers.

PPRG: How does the city of Philadelphia influence your design?

DS: Living in a city like Philly, with so much history around you, it’s almost impossible to not be inspired by it! It is such a great culmination of people, culture, and American history in one place. I am always influenced by the fact that we are a port city. The waterfront view here is amazing and so peaceful.

PPRG: Where do you like to shop? Where do you purchase your fabrics and materials from?

DS: For my personal style I love to thrift! I love all the great thrift stores and consignment shops around the city! For fabric, I love to shop on Fabric Row in Philadelphia. There are lots of great shops and stored to buy reclaimed and vintage fabrics from. There is store called Pennsylvania Fabric Outlet that I frequent. I also love to shop at Mood in NY because of the diverse selection and the fact that most of it is designer. I also love Elegant fabrics in NY.

PPRG: What was the best fashion event you’ve ever attended in Philadelphia?

DS: I love going to all the events for Philly Fashion Week. It’s the one time when you really get to see all the design talent that Philly has to offer. Plus it’s always a really great atmosphere! We know how to party in Philly!

PPRG: What has been your favorite challenge in the history of Project Runway?

DS: After watching all 11 seasons faithfully, I can honestly say that my favorite challenge has been the Design for the Post-apocalyptic Future from Season 1. I loved everything that the designers made and I’ve been sad there hasn’t been a challenge like that one since.

PPRG: Who would be your dream judge on the show?

DS: I would die to see Yoko Ono in that chair. Gaaaaa!

PPRG: What are your aspirations for the future?

DS: My immediate goal is to get my brand, Halcyon Collection, some attention and hopefully grow into a lifestyle brand one day. Being able to design full-time is my dream. I would also love to open a store here in Philly and one in NY eventually!
