Dancing & Drinking Through the Decades (Part 2)

I hope you enjoyed Part 1 (20’s and 30’s) now we are on to the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s!

1940’s

In 1940 the art deco craze was winding down and “supper clubs” were popping up!  A supper club refers to a dining establishment that is also a social club.   Patrons would go for cocktail hour, and stay to dance the night away.    When you walk into Walnut Street Supper Club you are instantly transported to the times of Ella Fitzgerald or Frank Sinatra.  They even have specialty dedicated cocktails called The Old Blue Eyes Martini, The Judy Garland, and The Dean Martin.   The entertainment is made up of talented performers who are also your waiters, waitresses, and bartenders.

1950’s

The 50’s might win as decade with the most iconic look.  I automatically think of retro diners, pin-up girls, Elvis Presley, and those poodle skirts.  If you’re looking for something like that, I recommend PYT.  It definitely has the laid back, retro feel… but the best part is definitely their spiked milkshakes and funky burgers.  The owner, Tommy, is always trying to create something unexpected that will spark up conversation, such as their Gay Chicken Sandwich which may or may not be inspired by an unmentioned fast food chain.

1960’s

The 60’s were all about dancing!  Popular dance moves included The Mashed Potato, The Pony, The Hitch Hike, and of course The Twist!  Philadelphia native Chubby Checker came out with the hugely successful hit “The Twist” which people still do today!

So you might notice I mention the Trestle Inn a lot on this blog.   It’s the coolest 60’s themed bar I’ve ever been too!  Well, it’s actually the only 60’s bar I’ve ever been too. They call themselves a whiskey go-go bar and that about sums it up. They have an impressive whiskey list and an ambiance that brings you back to the mod ages.  You must try the Classic Whiskey Sour!  They also have great DJ’s so go and “twist” the night away!
