PPRG: Can you tell us about the inspiration behind starting your permanent jewelry business? What motivated you to enter this industry?
Danielle: Growing up, I always had a passion for jewelry making as a hobby. I’d spend my Christmas and babysitting money on beads and wire from A.C. Moore to create amateur necklaces and bracelets. Then, two years ago, I discovered permanent jewelry on a trip to Scottsdale for one of my best friend’s weddings. My girlfriends and I all got permanent bracelets together, and it felt like a trendy, grown-up version of a friendship bracelet that connected the six of us despite living scattered across the country. This experience and my love for jewelry, combined with my desire to create something of my own, felt like a perfect opportunity to bring GLDN Rule to life.
PPRG: Permanent jewelry has gained an incredible amount of publicity within the last 2 years. What makes permanent jewelry a unique accessory choice?
Danielle: I love permanent jewelry because it’s completely customized to you. Each piece is tailored to reflect personal style and meaning, whether it’s through the choice of chains, design, charms, metals or even the significance of a moment in time. It’s dainty enough to wear every day, but strong enough to last. Unlike traditional jewelry which can be taken off and stored away, permanent jewelry is designed to be worn continuously, creating a lasting connection to the moments and memories it symbolizes.
PPRG: As a women-owned business, how do you feel your journey from corporate marketing has shaped the identity and values of your brand?
Danielle: While I’ve met amazing people and gained invaluable knowledge throughout my career, I’ve also experienced the harsher aspects of the corporate world. This contrast motivated me to create something different—something rooted in kindness and compassion.
GLDN Rule is inspired by the “Golden Rule” – to treat others how you would like to be treated. I believe the world could use more empathy and understanding, and I wanted my brand to embody those ideals. I strive to create an inclusive space where everyone feels welcomed and valued, creating an atmosphere of warmth, positivity, and respect where service is our competitive differentiator. My goal is to ensure that every interaction reflects these values, making my brand not just a business, but a community built on kindness.
PPRG: Can you walk us through the process of creating a piece of permanent jewelry, from design to completion?
Danielle: Creating a piece of permanent jewelry is a collaborative and personalized experience. It starts with the customer choosing the type of jewelry they want—bracelet, necklace, ring, or anklet—and selecting a chain that reflects their personal style. They can also add charms or connectors for a unique touch.
For bracelets, we measure the customer’s wrist to ensure a perfect fit, then cut the chain to that length. We close the loop without a clasp using a “jump ring.” Once the length is confirmed, we place a leather patch between their skin and the welding machine tip, called a tungsten, to act as a barrier. Finally, the ring is welded together with a tiny spark of electricity, completing the beautiful transformation into permanent jewelry.
PPRG: What has been the most rewarding part of launching your business within the vibrant Philadelphia market?
Danielle: The most rewarding part of launching my business in Philadelphia has been connecting with other inspiring women business owners and becoming part of the small business community. Putting yourself out there can be scary and the support I’ve received from friends, family, and fellow small businesses has been invaluable, and I’m so grateful for it. It has also been so special to be part of our customers’ personal moments for private parties – from weddings, to girls nights, bachelorette parties, Friendsgiving dinners, and more.
PPRG: How do you keep up with trends in the jewelry industry, and what are some current trends you’re excited about?
Danielle: I look to my suppliers and wholesalers for the latest products and styles. Social media is also a fantastic resource, as it showcases emerging trends and helps me engage with what customers are excited about. I’m noticing a rise in sustainable and ethically sourced materials, which aligns perfectly with my values and the direction I want to take my brand.
PPRG: In a city as unique as Philadelphia, what exciting opportunities have you embraced while establishing your business and how has it helped you grow?
Danielle: I’ve embraced every opportunity to get myself out there and network with new people. One event that significantly contributed to our growth was the 2024 Turkey Day Tailgate. We partnered with Philly PR Girl to sponsor this charity event, which provided the perfect platform for us to launch our brand. It combined our love for beautiful jewelry with a good cause, great food, and of course, the Eagles.
PPRG: What advice would you give to other women looking to start their own business, especially within the realm of creativity like jewelry design?
Danielle: Choose something you are truly passionate about that has market demand. While having a solid business plan is essential, don’t wait for everything to be perfect before you start. I faced my own doubts and feelings of imposter syndrome, and I certainly didn’t have every detail figured out when I launched. I still don’t. But I decided to jump in and get started anyway. Embrace the journey, learn as you go, and remember that growth often comes from taking those first steps, even when you don’t feel completely ready.
PPRG: Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future of your business? Do you have plans for expansion, new product lines, or collaborations?
Danielle: Looking ahead, my goal is to have my own small studio and boutique in Philadelphia by next year. Currently, I operate mainly through private parties and pop-up events, but I would love to have a brick-and-mortar space where I can welcome walk-ins and appointments. I also hope to expand my product lines to include more sustainably sourced custom and ready-to-wear jewelry, and explore potential collaborations with other brands that share our values.
PPRG: What is your favorite part about operating your business within the Philadelphia community?
Danielle: My favorite part about operating my business within the Philadelphia community is the incredible sense of connection and support. The local community is vibrant and diverse, filled with creative individuals and small businesses that uplift one another. I love collaborating with fellow entrepreneurs and participating in community events, as it creates relationships and allows us to share our passions. Being part of this supportive environment not only inspires me but also makes me feel truly connected to the heart of Philadelphia.
