Happy Black History Month, Philly! This month is all about spreading love, celebrating our incredible community, and taking the time to educate ourselves on the history that built this city and beyond. From historic landmarks to modern-day creators, Philly is bursting with so many fun and informative events that highlight Black culture and heritage. If you’re looking for the best ways to celebrate this February, look no further! We’ve gathered our favorite local recommendations that perfectly encapsulate Black excellence in the 215.

 

An Exhibition of Black Women’s Basketball History Hosted By Black Women’s Basketball Museum and Mouth of Rain  
  • Space 1026 Art Gallery & Studios, 844 N. Broad St., Philadelphia

Join Philly’s Mouth of Rain and the Black Women’s Basketball Museum to celebrate the Black Women who have paved the way for women’s basketball. The gallery will feature Black and queer legacies of Black Women who have changed the game. This is the first time for this exhibition in Philly, so don’t miss out on this opportunity.

Soul, Sound, and Voice: The Art Of Jerry Pinkey at Woodmere

Don’t miss Woodmere’s tribute to the legendary Jerry Pinkney!  His “A Chorus of Voices” exhibit is a stunning look at Black history through watercolor, featuring everything from African American traditions to portraits of icons like Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix. It’s the perfect blend of art and history!

Black Cinema Week at the Philadelphia Film Society

Join the Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) for a week-long celebration of classic Black cinema, with this year’s “Shot Callers” theme focusing on actors-turned-directors. This year’s lineup will feature horror, comedy, and drama, including two showings of Fences, the Denzel Washington-directed adaptation of the August Wilson play. Harriett’s Bookshop will even collaborate with the Free Library of Philadelphia for the event to explore connections between filmmaking and writing!

Noah Davis at the Philadelphia Art Museum

Catch the international tour of Noah Davis at its final stop!  This powerful survey features 60 works that capture the beauty and complexity of Black life through a dreamy, magical lens. From family and race to politics, Davis’s art is incredibly moving and visceral. It’s located in the Special Exhibits galleries and is included with your regular admission, definitely a must-see for your February museum run!

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at the Academy of Music

Don’t miss the magic of Ailey at the historic Academy of Music! This three-day run features four unique performances that blend technical brilliance with deep emotional storytelling. From timeless classics to bold new works from today’s top choreographers, it’s a breathtaking look at the beauty and complexity of the human spirit. Leaders and Legends of Philadelphia at Smith Memorial Playground

Smith Memorial Playground is back with its annual Leaders and Legends exhibition! This year, they are highlighting inspiring Black youth leaders who embody “revolutionary action.” It is such a great way to educate and inspire the kids while enjoying the outdoors. Best of all, it’s totally free and open to everyone, making it the perfect family-friendly stop this February!
