Celebrating Black History Month Across Philadelphia

Happy Black History Month! This month is all about spreading love to everyone, celebrating, and educating yourself and others on Black History. Philadelphia hosts many events for Black History Month highlighting individuals, culture, heritage, and more! If you’re stuck on where to celebrate this February, here are some great recommendations around the city that encapsulate Black History! 


Museum of the American Revolution

The Museum of the American Revolution hosts a variety of events that are perfect for celebrating Black History Month! Throughout February, they offer unique exhibits highlighting African Americans during The Revolutionary War. Gallery tours, first-person theatrical performances, and a variety of activities are the perfect way to get educated and honor Black History. 

Betsy Ross House

The Historic Betsy Ross House hosts ‘History Maker Saturdays’ and ‘Storytelling Sundays’ every weekend in February. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on History Maker Saturdays, you get the chance to hear stories about two Black women during colonial Philadelphia, Ona Judge and Sarah Bass Allen. On Storytelling Sundays, guests will hear stories about the history of black experience in Philadelphia. All Black History Month events and programs at the Betsy Ross House are free.

Free Library of Philadelphia

The Free Library of Philadelphia hosts a multitude of events across its locations celebrating Black culture and heritage.! There is sure to be an event for everyone at any age, including haircare 101, cooking demonstrations, live podcasts, movie screenings, storytelling, and crafts.! Make sure to check out their schedule to find the perfect event for you! 

Mural Arts Philadelphia at Hyatt Centric Center City Philadelphia

Hyatt Centric Center City Philadelphia is hosting its second annual Black History Month Art Show. This art show highlights five local Black artists, and is put together by Ginger Rudolph of Mural Arts Philadelphia. This is being held through mid-March and is a great opportunity to interact with these artists and their work!

Smith Memorial Playground

Smith Memorial Playground is a great option to celebrate Black History Month with any kids in your life! The playground has 10 honorees, with an educational banner about each selected Philadelphia honoree placed around the playground.! This is a great opportunity to educate and inspire!
