Leaders and Legends at Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse
Returning this month at Smith Memorial Playground is an exhibit honoring African American leaders and legends in law, music, journalism, education, sports, medicine, and the performing arts. Designed to give parents and guardians the chance to “Quiz the Kids”, the displays include biographical information, highlighted facts, and suggestions for Philadelphia landmarks, activities, and reading related to or inspired by each honoree, which families can explore.
The African American Children’s Book Fair
This month marks the 30th anniversary of The African American Children’s Book Project. This one-day event will be on February 5th. The event will be highlighting award-winning authors and illustrators who will read and be available to autograph their books. Opportunities to purchase African American children’s books will be available, as well as fun games, prizes, and promotional giveaways, all to spark and promote the joy of reading.
PACTS 2022 Black History Month Virtual Trivia Challenge
In partnership with the Franklin Institute, PACTS will hold its 4th annual Black History Challenge to raise funds for youth programming, scholarships, and initiatives. Include four friends/family members in a virtual game show-style contest with the opportunity to take home a trophy, bragging rights, and the title of Black History Challenge winners until next year! This fundraiser celebrates the contributions of members of the African Diaspora to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The registration fee is $20.00 per team, and the deadline is February 25th!
Black History Mural tour
A tour of murals depicting struggles and backstories of African Americans will be hosted by Historic Fair. The tour will take place at Historic Fair Hill in Germantown. During the tour, history Educator, Carolyn Singleton will share the stories and struggles behind each mural surrounding the burial grounds of great human rights activists. This is a free event and will be held on Saturday, February 12th from 12 p.m.-3 p.m.
The Black Journey: African-American History Walking Tour of Philadelphia
A fact-filled 90-minute adventure in Philadelphia offers the best experience to learn about the history of black Philadelphia. The tour begins at the Independence Visitor Center on Market street. The tours take place every Saturday and public holidays during the spring, summer, and autumn at 2 p.m. RSVP in advance is required!
African American Museum Philadelphia (AAMP)
With the option to attend virtually or in-person, this is a not to miss event. AAMP invites you to enjoy their Black History Month Concert on February 20th at 3:30 p.m. to indulge in Black art, culture, and history. The concert will feature special performances from local musicians, dancers, and poets! Make sure to register to reserve your spot!
