Women’s History Month: #WCW with Simone Biles

It’s Women’s History Month! Here at Philly PR Girl, we’re going to be having weekly #WomanCrushWednesday blog features, highlighting some amazing women in the world… both past and present! To kick off the month, our #WomanCrushWednesday pick is the amazingly talented, Olympic gold medalist, Simone Biles.

At 23 years old, and standing at 4’9,” Simone Biles is an agile force to be reckoned with. She is a history-making U.S. Olympic gymnast and even has a signature move named after her. “The Biles” is a double-flip with a half-twist. Her coaches praise her speed, ability to launch herself so high, and her air awareness–knowing where she is while in the air.

As of the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics, Biles became the first female U.S. gymnast to win four gold medals at one Game. She was a key member of the “Final Five,” the 2016 U.S. women’s gymnastic team. Another of her firsts before her Rio accomplishments is that she is the first gymnast to win three consecutive world all-around titles ( from 2013–15). An all-around is the competition won by earning the highest combined score in all events, which for women is four events. Biles’ success goes back even further to 2013 when she became the first female African American athlete to win the all-around gold in the World Championships. Now, she is the gymnast with the most World Medals, holding 25!

Biles grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and started developing her talents at a young age after a field trip to a gymnastics center. She trained and competed throughout her youth, sometimes under strict coaches who weren’t the biggest fans of her lighthearted and bubbly personality. That didn’t stop her from being Simone. Instead, she tried to encourage her fellow gymnasts to enjoy the sport, have fun with each other, and also practice and train.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were slated to be Biles’ last. When the Games were postponed, she considered quitting but realized that she had come too far to stop. She has continued training over the past year in hopes of pushing herself to her greatest. Check out her famous and well-known move, “the Biles”. Simone Biles wants to see what she is capable of, and so do we! The Philly PR Girls will be cheering her on during the Tokyo 2021 Olympics!

It’s no secret that Simone is wildly talented. She is just one of many amazing women the team at Philly PR Girl is featuring. Stay tuned for the rest of our Women Crush Wednesday picks as we dive into Women’s History Month!
