Philly’s Best Skincare Defenses Against Winter Weather

While winter weather can bring snow-kissed lashes and ice skating in Dilworth Park, they can also lead to itchy, cracked skin. More important than ever, showing your skin extra love can prevent the unbearable dryness during the winter. We all know the basic fixes such as moisturizing and applying lip balm, but if those don’t suffice, here are more remedies to try.

Facials

Unfortunately, getting a facial is commonly seen as something you only do to #TreatYoself. However, evidence shows that getting facials regularly can do wonders for your skin. Located on Race Street in charming Old City, Moxie Blue Salon* offers refreshing hydra facials. Targeting dullness, dryness, acne, wrinkles and more, this facial rejuvenates your complexion without any downtime.

A great option for hydrating facials is Hand & Stone Logan Square.* Located in the heart of Fairmount, this spa offers a variety of facials catered to your skin type. Each one has the ultimate goal of total hydration. One of our favorites is the famous Anti-Aging Collagen Facial. It infuses skin with a veil of collagen, cellular complexes, amino acids, vitamins and natural oils to help increase moisture levels.

For a luxe experience, visit The Underground Spa at The Logan Hotel.** Their Moisture Drench Facial immediately replenishes the skin with deeply hydrating botanical blends. The spa primarily uses products from favorite brands like Naturopathica. The hibiscus enzyme peel smooths and calms stressed skin, while the Gotu Kola Balm protects it from harsh environmental elements.

Another fantastic go-to destination for skin care is Contour Body Studio,* located in Kensington. Unlike anything else in Philly, their CryoSkin 2.0 Facelift treatment reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin hydration levels. They apply both heat and cold in this effective thermal therapy. The fat cells drop between 17º – 12º C causing them to naturally destroy and pass through the lymphatic system.

Face Masks

Although facials help immensely with easing dry skin, it’s not reasonable (or cost-effective) to get one every night. That’s where at-home face masks come in! Known as “pure skin magic,” Coco Kitty’s skincare line includes deeply nourishing hibiscus and charcoal face masks. Even better– these locally produced products are made with authentic plant-based ingredients!

Franklin & Whitman also offers a great line of plant-based and cruelty free masks. Their face mask combo pack is a great place to start, as it includes a variety of different masks that target the most popular skin issues. Our favorite for radiance is the energizing Midtown Village Mask, made from fair-trade coffee and activated charcoal.

Silk Pillowcases

Because your face spends so much time in contact with your pillow each night, it’s important to think smart when it comes to beauty sleep. Silk pillowcases are your best bet because the gentle material is all-natural and hypoallergenic. Additionally, it does not draw moisture out of your skin, allowing for more hydration than cotton and other common fabrics. The smooth nature of silk also helps reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and frizzy hair. If pure silk is too pricey, opt for a satin alternative instead.

Make sure to pick up Kitsch silk products at Verde on South 13th Street in Center City. Nearby, you could also indulge in designer Kumi Kookoon’s collection at Luxe Home Philadelphia on Chestnut Street. If you’re in Fishtown, try Riverside Tool & Dye’s hand-dyed raw silk pillows.

Modify Showers

On a cold winter day, it’s easy to get lost in a long, steaming hot shower. But, when it comes to your skin, these types of showers are not as nice as they sound. Hot water strips your skin of its natural hydration and moisture. Fortunately, there’s an easy fix! Simply stated, shorten your showers. Creating a playlist that’s under 10 minutes will keep you on track for shorter showers. In addition, switching the water temperature from steaming hot to warm (or dare I say…lukewarm) can make a difference.
