Cultural Events Taking Place in Philly This Spring

Spring has sprung! This means it’s time to step out and make moves during the glorious weather. Philadelphia has so many events to offer to make use of your time and to grasp new culture. Global Philadelphia has a comprehensive list of functions and activities that provide opportunity to learn more about other cultures and showcase your pride. Here are a few of our top selections for global citizens of Philadelphia to take advantage of!

The Artist’s Garden

This event tells the intertwined stories of the American garden movement with more than 100 beautifully reproduced artworks by Cecilia Beaux, Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, and others. These pieces are featured alongside books, journals, and ephemeral artifacts. Visit the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts now through May 24th to experience illustrated texts that range from environmentalism to printed technologies; from the genres of garden writing to the distinctions between public and domestic spaces or American and French impressionism.

Asian American Heritage Festival

The 9th Annual Asian American Heritage Month Celebration is returning on Saturday, May 9th! The event will be held at Franklin Square Park on 6th and Race streets from 1 – 9 p.m. Expect a day of family fun with plenty of activities for the kids and a diverse array of performers on the main stage. This celebration will also feature short films from the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, a health fair, beer garden, children’s fair, various Asian food trucks, and much more!

Al Dia Diversity Career Fair

The 14th Annual Diversity Career Fair is open to all! Whether you’re a recent graduate or you’re looking to start a new career, Al Dia has you covered on Thursday, May 14th. Registration is free but required. A drink ticket for the networking reception, held from 5 – 7 p.m.,  is $5. Be sure to bring at least 20 copies of your resume, including one for the registration table. Stop by The Hub Commerce Square on 2001 Market Street to meet diverse and highly-qualified career-seekers and industry professionals.

 

La Giara (The Water Jug): A Musical Drama in Concert

La Giara merges Italian Folk music and opera with Brazilian choro and jazz, 587679110787757078-lagiara-banner.full_telling the story of Patricia King’s family emigration from Sicily to Philadelphia. Cleverly combining comedy and drama, this show expresses themes relevant to gender oppression, migration, and cultural losses that families experienced in adapting to the New World. Check out the concert on Sunday, May 17th at International House of Philadelphia, beginning at 4 p.m. Tickets range from $10-25.

Fairmount Park will be hosting Caribbean Art and Culture during Father’s Day weekend to showcase Caribbean Heritage! From Friday, June 19th through Sunday, June 21st, there will be a carnival boat ride, parade, and Father’s Day picnic in the park. Stop by and get your masquerade on!
