This Week in Philly

Here’s What’s Going On This Week in Philly…

Monday, April 6

  • Join Philly PR Girl as we team up with Phan Cave* and Phillies Nation for this year’s inaugural Opening Day Tailgate at Citizens Bank Park before the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Red Sox! Complete with live music, food and beer, games and a face painting station for kids, this tailgate doubles as a fundraiser supporting CHOP’s Sarcoma Department and Shane’s Future Days in remembrance of Shane Metzgar. Tickets are just $35 for access to The Phan Cave and all its amenities, plus unlimited pours of Straub Beer!
  • The Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival starts off with a Calligraphy Demonstration at Liberty Place Rotunda on 16th and Chestnut from 12 – 1 p.m. Learn more about Japanese traditions and try your hand at this beautiful art form.

Tuesday, April 7

  • Check out Emily West, former contestant on America’s Got Talent, at World Cafe Live. She will be performing with The Dove and The Wolf at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $20-$25.

Wednesday, April 8

  • Philadelphia Artists’ Collective presents Thomas Heywood’s The Fair Maid of the West at Broad Street Ministries, featuring a colorful cast of swashbuckling heroes, treacherous villains, and plucky heroines beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 with student ID.
  • Stop by the Kimmel Center for Sittin’ In: Free Monthly Jam Session featuring the hottest musical talent from the city. This month’s show features Emcee Ciara and DJ Suga Shay. The show is hosted by Steve Coleman & The Five Elements and doors open at 8 p.m.
  • In light of repairs due to a pipe burst, The Gaslight is celebrating their reopening this week (and introduction of a new menu) with a complimentary happy hour from 5 – 7 p.m. Guests will enjoy cocktails courtesy of Bluecoat American Dry Gin and Bluecoat Barrel Finished Gin.

Thursday, April 9

  • Explore the beautiful and messy, complex, and even violent nature of life and humanity with BeginAgain, a Seattle-based dance company performing at FringeArts on the 9th, 10th, and 11th. Performances unfold within an intricate play of video, light, and sound—at times revealing the performers, at times fading them away like a memory out of reach.
  • The United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia will be hosting a happy hour from 6 to 9 p.m. to raise money for the Shot@Life global vaccination campaign at the Tavern on Broad. All of the money will be donated to programs which help children in developing countries get lifesaving vaccinations.

Friday, April 10

  • Philadelphia’s own Denise King will perform some of her favorite love songs at the Art Museum with Art After 5. With phrasing styles borrowed from Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat “King” Cole, and Frank Sinatra, she draws the audience into her performances while radiating energy, spontaneity, and style. The performance runs from 5 p.m. – 8:45 p.m. and is free with museum admission.
  • The University of the Arts will host its sixth year of Art Unleashed showcasing the work of emerging and established artists. This free show features the original work of students, faculty, and alumni through an exhibition and sale in Hamilton Hall on the campus of the University of the Arts.

Saturday, April 11

  • The Philadelphia Orchestra presents Beethoven and Mozart at Verizon Hall with Paul Goodwin as conductor, featuring Choong-Jin Chang on viola. The show starts at 8 p.m. with ticket prices ranging from $40-$170. Get yours today before they’re all gone!

Sunday, April 12

  • The Enchantment Theatre Company presents The Adventures of Harold and the Purple Crayon at the Kimmel Center, beginning at 2 p.m. The ‘Harold’ books have captivated families for more than fifty years, celebrating the imagination of children and the unique way they see the world. Tickets range from $20-$40.
  • The 4th Annual Philly Farm & Food Fest comes to the Pennsylvania Convention Center from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Proceeds benefit Fair Food and PASA (Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture), whose work supports local farms and food. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
