When Philly PR Girl co-hosted a fundraiser event with our friends at Rock On Philly a few months back, we expected to hear from a talented and diverse group of performers at this casual open mic night. What we didn’t expect was an ass-kicking dose of powerhouse duo Nalani and Sarina. Super sweet and friendly upon introduction, these girls embodied a whole other persona when they took the stage at Tin Angel. Armed with their guitars, Nalani and Sarina exhibited an ethereal energy and plenty of attitude amidst a variety of original songs and covers, including their rendition of a “traditional Filipino lullaby” – a lusty cover of “I Wanna Be Sedated” played on electric ukuleles.
The Bolton twins have been singing and making music together since a very young age. This is undoubtedly evidenced in their live performances, which are raw, real, and flawlessly in sync. As Nalani says, “There’s something so special about siblings singing together or playing together. It’s a whole other type of energy that’s so rare… I couldn’t imagine doing this by myself.” Though each girl is immensely talented in her own right, we couldn’t imagine it either!
Nalani and Sarina’s album, Lessons Learned, debuted in January 2014 and features a sophisticated mix of pop rock with soulful elements, peppered with tender lyrics and vintage-inspired dance beats. Musicality aside, what we really admire about these ladies is their loyalty and love for Philadelphia’s music scene. Despite successes in New York City and the surrounding region, including an impressive residency at The Bitter End, Nalani and Sarina feel Philadelphia is something of a second home to them and their artistry. We’re thrilled to have this dynamic duo performing around the city at Tin Angel, World Cafe Live, and beyond!
