Our team has been busy attending the Global Philly 2013 events happening now through November 4, 2013.   Here’s another recap of some of the events we attended.

World Trade Center of Philadelphia: International Showcase

Event Held On: 9/25/13

The World Trade Center of Philadelphia recognized the international vitality of our region with the annual Philadelphia International Showcase Reception. A leading business-networking event, the reception took place in the Curtis Institute of Music’s new Lenfest Hall. Councilors of 26 international cities were in attendance, introduced by Linda Conlin, President of the WTC alongside Elizabeth Warshawer, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Curtis Institute. A trio of talented Curtis students treated guests to an excellent performance of a few classical collections in violin, flute, and cello. The evening reception culminated with a few words given by Mayor Nutter on Philadelphia’s thriving economic and businesses sectors, strengthened by our global ties and relationships outside the region.

GP13 Pop-Up Event: PHS Pop-Up Garden

Event Held On: 9/27/13

The Global Philly 2013 team held a Pop-Up luncheon at the PHS Pop Up Garden on South Broad Street, inviting members of the press, Global Philadelphia Association, and Expo participants to meet for a few short hours in the afternoon. Two full picnic tables were occupied by Philadelphia locals from many walks of life and international countries, chattering away in talk of their backgrounds, lines of work, and contributions to the region. Every person went around each table and introduced themselves, their business, and ways in which they consider themselves to be “a Global Philadelphian”. The casual luncheon got to the heart of what the Global Philly expo is about: meeting people from all across the world that share a common interest in advancing Philadelphia’s perception and visibility within the global community.

Campus Philly: College Day on the Parkway

Event Held On: 9/28/13

The Philadelphia Art Museum steps filled with students returning to the city this fall for a day made just for them. Campus Day Philly gave college students of all grade levels a chance to not only meet kids from other schools but to win prizes and find out about fun and interesting events going on across Philly. Some of the free activities included a rock climbing wall, hula hoop competition and Foosball competition, where the winner received $100 cash, meant to be put towards books and other academic expenses.

Turkish Delight! at the Penn Museum

Event Held On: 9/28/13

Global Philly provided the city of brotherly love with an invigorating afternoon of celebration! The Penn Museum was transformed to shed light on the Republic of Turkey. Free with a Penn Museum admission donation, Turkish Delight! was cultured event that will surely be remembered by all attendees.

Belly dancing and family craft demonstrations were among the day’s eye-popping events.  Children were engrossed with the adorable process to create a Turkish dancer using popsicle sticks, paper plates, and marshmallows!

High energy and great learning experiences filled the room at this Turkish extravaganza.  Our favorite part of the fun-filled day was the belly dancing workshop and performance by Penn Yalla! Who knew cultural learning could be such a blast?
World Affairs Council of Philadelphia: 2013 Atlas Award

Event Held On: 9/30/13

The World Affairs Council of Philadelphia took to the Loews Hotel in the city’s downtown area to honor America’s first responders with presentations, awards and a dinner. The night was led by a speech followed by a question and answer session with Connecticut Governor Daniel P. Malloy, who accepted the 2013 Atlas Award on behalf of America’s first responders. His experience with first responders extends that of many other governors due to unfortunate events like the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. An emotion night, Gov. Malloy spoke of not only how to improve the system to avoid events like Sandy Hook in the future, but also of his gratitude towards first responders and everything that they do.
