Our team has been busy hitting up the Global Philly 2013 events happening now through November 1, 2013.  Here’s what you missed, but don’t worry, there are many other events coming up

Launch Event Ceremony Sponsored by PHLCVB

Event Held On: 9/16/2013

The official start of the Global Philly 2013 exposition was brought in with a ceremony sponsored by the Philadelphia Convention and Visitor’s Bureau at the Top of The Tower at 3 Logan Square. Global Philadelphia Association members and coordinators from GP13’s dozens of events enjoyed drinks and international-inspired bites, mingling and conversing while the exposition’s official trailer played on the projector over a breathtaking view of the city skyline.

John Smith, the President of GP13’s sponsor Reed Smith, gave his opening remarks, followed by President and CEO of the PHLCVB Jack Ferguson. Mayor Nutter was then introduced to a flurry of photo-taking, and spoke on the GPA’s behalf concerning Philadelphia’s global perception and desire for growth and international recognition among emerging global cities. The surprise highlight of the evening was Mayor Nutter’s announcement that the City of Philadelphia had been accepted as a World Heritage City under UNESCO, the 23rd city worldwide and first in the United States to receive this accreditation.

Geographical Society of Philadelphia: Dinner Honoring Jose Garces

Event Held On: 9/17/2013

As part of Global Philly 2013, Iron Chef Jose Garces wined and dined guests of the Geographical Society of Philadelphia’s annual dinner. Held at Garces’ own JG Domestic restaurant, the five course dinner covered the flavors of five different hispanic regions; Cuba, Mexico, Spain, Peru and Ecuador. The main course however, took on a Chicago flair, a nod to Garces’ childhood home. The evening was to honor Chef Garces, who sent everyone home with a signed copy of his cookbook, The Latin Road Home. A food lovers’ dream, each dish mixed flavors you wouldn’t expect – like hearty bacon with sweet corn – for an experience our taste buds will never forget.

Perspectives on Peace – Drexel University Photography Exhibit

Event Held On: 9/19/2013

Peace Day Philly has included many events in the past, but not many of the artistic variety. This year, as part of Global Philly 2013, Peace Day Philly committee member and Drexel director of international programs Heidi West teamed up with the co-founder and coordinator of PDP, Lisa Parker to put on a photo exhibit at the university. The exhibit features photos that focus on housing, or the global lack thereof. Depicted are squatters from around the world along with people who have found housing through organizations like Pathways to Housing. Despite the dark subject matter, there is beauty to each photo. The idea behind this exhibit is art that inspires action, according to West, who hopes to see positive changes thanks to Peace Day Philly – which is officially September 21 – and the events that come from it.
