South Street Night Market

When you’re greeted at an event by a hula-hooping lady on stilts, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’re going to have a good time.  The Philly PR Girl team gallivanted down to South Street last night for The Food Trust’s Night Market.  For some of us, like Alex, it was her first Night Market, but luckily Kate served as a handy guide for navigating as she’s been to almost every one! If you’ve never been to Night Market, it’s a gathering of Philly’s finest food trucks and restaurants that gather in a neighborhood for the nom-fulfilling event of a lifetime.  Each truck formulates a few special dishes, and the Philly foodies line up in hungry anticipation.  This premiere street food festival made its 2010 debut in East Passyunk, followed by ten more successful Night Markets (and counting).  Drawing in over 100,000 attendees since its inception, the Night Market has brought a great deal of attention to the local food scene.

Arriving with empty (and ready) stomachs,  our attention was drawn the Alla Spina tent.  This eatery (located at Mt. Vernon Street and Broad) was offering a Philadelphia classic with an interesting twist.  Alex describe their sausage cheesesteak on a pretzel roll as taking her taste buds for a ride.  “Taking two of our city’s most renowned foods and combining them with an extra shot of flavor was potentially the smartest culinary move I’ve witnessed all year!”  Continuing down the seemingly endless row of food stations, Kate found herself embracing her spicy side with a Cuban quesadilla from Vernalicious.  Accompanied by a cider with a kick called the “Crabby Granny” from Frecon Farms, both her sweet and savory cravings were satisfied.  As phenomenal as these dishes were, it’s truly the liveliness that makes the Night Market something to remember.  Looking up, neighboring residents sat on their roofs taking in the incredible scene.  On the streets attendees could find everything from The Clay Studio having pottery-making races to a New Orleans-style band strutting around with a fleet of dancing followers.  The Night Market spotlighted the diverse cuisine of the city while giving the City of Brotherly Love an exciting night out.

This first South Street stop was unanimously the best Night Market thus far.  Spanning down South Street from 9th to Front, attendees were provided with enough space to eat and socialize.  As an added bonus, the event strategically utilized social media with printouts of every Instagram that included the hashtags #SouthStreet and #NightMarket.  From the freebies to munchies, it was a night to remember.  Be sure to catch the Philly PR Girl team at the next Night Market which will be held in Chinatown on Thursday, October 3rd.  Come eat and explore with us in this up and coming neighborhood!
