Love, Loss, and What I Wore

Five women in black-clad outfits sat in front of me on the stage of the Suzanne Roberts Theatre.  I walked into this production not knowing what to expect.  However, once the show started, I couldn’t get enough.  The cast consisted of familiar faces, such as “The Office” alumni Kate Flannery, who each delivered stories of heartbreak, growing up, and hilarity paired with what they were wearing during that time.  The acclaimed Nora Ephron, who wrote the screenplay, stated that the story “is not about fashion; it is about what clothes really are to us, those moments when we are constantly trying to find our identity through them.”

During these anecdotes, hand drawn photos of the outfits were presented directly on stage right. Each of these stories were relatable to the audience whether male or female.  The set was simple with five chairs, five music stands, and an easel, which gave the stories that much more of a dramatic and meaningful impact.  Relying on dialogue and talent, the play was flawless due to the actresses’ phenomenal ability.  All in all, it was a fantastic way to spend a rainy Friday evening.
