Comedy Takes Over a Jazz Cafe

On Wednesday night, I accepted an invitation from Elise Thomson-Hohl of the comedy group, Tight Six, to check out NOT JAZZ.  This monthly stand-up event at Chris’ Jazz Cafe is presented by the group and showcases local comedians from Philly to New York.  You’ll also catch Tight Six members performing their original sketches  in between acts, and a local band performs during and after the show. This week’s band was the acclaimed Rob, Lately.

Tight Six began this past fall when a few young comics happened to be starting their careers around the same time.  With like-minded goals and good chemistry, they have been very successful in such a short period of time. The group consists of Joe Bell, Mikey Garcia, Aaron Nevins, Elise Thomson-Hohl, Becca Travin, and Dan Vetrano.

In this second installment of NOT JAZZ, the comedians highlighted were: Dan Scully, Keane Cobb, Gregg Gethard, Trevor Cunnion, Mary Radzinski, and John Nunn.  Not only for the sake of girl power but also because she was genuinely our favorite, Mary Radzinski won Funniest of the Night.  Other memorable moments was Trevor Cunnion’s slightly offensive, feel-guilty-for-laughing one-liner closing and John Nunn’s perspective on the American Dream.

Catch the gang every Sunday at Fergie’s Pub for their Open Mic Night starting at 8PM.  Also follow them on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with their gigs and jokes. In the meantime, watch this Slacktory video, by Aaron and starring Elise.
