3rd Annual SustainPHL Celebrates Sustainability Significance

The third annual SustainPHL ceremony is being held on Thursday, August 16, 2018. This event is a celebration of sustainable significance in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. The festivities will take place at WHYY located at 150 N. 6th Street in Old City from 7 – 10 p.m. With 29 nominees in nine categories, the awards honor a gamut of impassioned changemakers. The SustainPHL award categories this year include: Impact Business Leader, Business Innovation, Social Impact, Climate Hero, Activist of the Year, and more.

From sustainability visionaries to local heroes, these nominees are making a big impact in their Philadelphia communities. This year, for the first time, the Activist of the Year nominees feature an all-female lineup, all of whom are making remarkable progress. This category celebrates those who are dedicated to promoting a sustainability cause in their community. These women are: Flora Cardoni, Gabriella Paez and Kelly Offner. They have been working tirelessly to increase visibility and awareness of sustainability initiatives to broader audiences. Find out more about them here.

The evening’s awards will be presented by previous winners and industry executives. Bethany Edwards, CEO and co-founder of LIA Diagnostics, created Lia, the first flushable and biodegradable pregnancy test. LIA Diagnostics was a SustainPHL 2016 nominee and a winner of Fast Company’s 2018 World Changing Ideas Awards. Atif Bostic is the current Executive Director of Uplift, who oversees the organization’s core focus. Those three areas are: the creation of sustainable food access, access to health care, and access to capital in underserved communities. Naida Elena Burgos is the Community Engagement Coordinator at the Center for Bioethics, Urban Health and Policy at Temple University. Burgos was SustainPHL 2017’s Neighborhood Champion.

In addition to celebrating the nominees, guests are invited dive into educational and networking opportunities. One of the highlights of SustainPHL is the “Munch and Learn” exhibits. Connect with personalized interactions on topics such as affordable solar energy with Solarize Philly, hiking with Friends of Wissahickon, gardening with Bartram’s Garden, and more.

Tickets for this 21+ event include an open bar featuring Flying Fish brews, new Quaker City Shrubs, and a variety of local spirits including Dad’s Hat Rye and Stateside Vodka.
