Here’s whats going on this week in Philly…

Monday, May 19th

  • Movie Night at the Troc – Catch Spike Jonze’s Golden Globe nominated comedy “Her”, about a man’s relationship with his female operating system at the Trocadero at 8 pm. The $3 admission price goes toward a drink or snack. 21+ over.
  • Treasures from Korea – This is the final week to visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s latest exhibit, featuring Arts and Culture of the Joseon Dynasty from 1392-1910. In this time, 27 monarchs ruled the Korean peninsula, leaving behind a wide variety of objects currently on display, including painted screens, scrolls, calligraphy, costumes, and more.

 

Tuesday, May 20th

  • Altar Boyz – Get into the spirit with this lively musical about a fresh new boy band, coming to copes with fame and fortune as they close out their “Raise the Praise” tour in Philadelphia. The 11th Hour Theatre Company’s show runs through June 1st at The Arts Bank.
  • Toy Story at Xfinity Live – Enjoy a movie night with the whole family on Xfinity Live’s 32 foot big screen TV. “Toy Story” will begin playing at 5:40 pm, and specialty themed kids menus will be available. This is a free event that includes free parking and popcorn.

Wednesday, May 21st

  • Public Speaking 101 – Founder of Rock on Philly, Jennifer Logue, hosts a workshop to improve anxiety, posture, diction, voice, and other speech mechanics. From 6 to 7:30 at The Pyramid Club. Tickets are $5 for members and $20 for non-members.
  • Rock on Philly’s 1st Birthday – Party with the Rock on Philly crew as they celebrate their first year of getting the word out about Philadelphia’s music scene through their amazing online news source. The lineup includes Paul Saint John, Deep City Healers, The Wayside Shakeup, The Good Excuses, and Curtis Jr.

Thursday, May 22nd

  • Dine Out for the Environment – Make your reservations now! For one night, participating restaurants in the Philadelphia area will be serving signature dishes to highlight their commitment to sustainability, where 15% of sales will be donated to the Clean Air Council.
  • Flawless Thursdays with DJ Qlassic – Come out to Barra in Old City for $3 domestic beers, $5 well drinks, hookah and sets by some of Philly’s hottest DJs. Doors open at 10 pm, 21+.

Friday, May 23rd

  • PHAIR – Browse through a wide variety of art and handmade vendors throughout this 3-day open air artisan market taking place at The Oval from Thursday through Saturday. There will be food trucks, bands, DJs, Victory Brewpub on Wheels, and Frecon Farms will be serving wine and cider for those over 21.
  • Dana Fuchs at World Cafe – Critically acclaimed for her portrayal of “Sadie” in the Beatles’ musical film Across the Universe, Dana Fuchs is bringing her gritty, soulful and bluesy tunes to the World Cafe Live in promotion of her third album, Bliss Avenue. The show starts at 8 pm, and tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door.

Saturday, May 24th

  • Memorial Day at the NCC – Pay your respects during Memorial Day weekend at the National Constitution Center, with special programming taking place Saturday through Monday. There will be crafts and karaoke, shows and workshops, morning flag raising, thank-a-vet letter writing, and more.
  • Do You Know Pippi Longstocking? – This beloved redheaded character was first introduced to children in Sweden as Pippi Långstrump in 1945, recognized as a symbol of freedom in post-WWII Europe. Explore this original exhibition featuring Pippi’s world for creative play for kids at the American Swedish Historical Museum.
  • * Sunset Wine Cruise – Set sail with Harbor Lines and Old City’s Pinot Boutique for the first of 10 nights spent sipping reds, whites, and bubbly out on the Delaware River. Each session has a different special tasting theme, with numerous pours, historical sites, and a bit of wine education from Pinot Boutique’s Dan “the Wine Man” Sorkin!

Sunday, May 25th

  • Man-Up Workshop – Prepare yourself to be ready at the sign of danger to defend your family and community. Philly Urban Defense is hosting a two-hour class that teaches men self defense and personal protection, reasonable grounds for actions, tactical martial arts and more.
  • How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying – Follow J. Pierrepont Finch’s hilarious endeavors to climb the corporate ladder in this satirical 1960’s period musical, playing at the Walnut Street Theatre through July 13th. Tickets are $10 – 85.
  • Jam on the River – The crazy popular Memorial Day weekend concert returns to Penn’s Landing this year with a heavily electronic lineup, featuring Lotus, Griz, Papadosio, Grimace Federation and more. Tickets are $53.50, and the first set begins at 1:30 pm.
