Off the Grid in Philly: Taco Tuesday

In a large city like Philly, it can be hard to become a regular at a certain place. With so many options out there, it’s hard to filter through the good, the bad, and the over-hyped. We all know those friendly recommendations that you don’t quite live up to their expectations, whether they’re too packed or watered down.

Sometimes the best places are, in fact, a bit off the beaten path. That’s why we’re starting a series to highlight local spots. First up: tacos. Some of these taquerias have weekly specials, while others offer everyday low prices. In no particular order, here’s our low key, local edition of Taco Tuesday.

Taqueria La Prima
1104 S. 9th Street

Tucked away in the Italian Market, stands a small taco stand, formerly known as Prima Pizza Taqueria Mexicana. Although the shop is tiny and not really meant for dining in, their food boasts big flavor! You can get three good-sized, filling tacos for about $9. Best part is…they’re open until 3 a.m. over the weekend. Perfect for your late night cravings and your wallet.

Taqueria La Prima
Tres Jalepenos
901 S. 8th Street

This a family owned and operated restaurant is another South Philly gem. Situated right on the corner of Christian & 8th Streets, they have a huge menu. While there are an array of options like burritos, enchiladas, and more, the tacos are impeccable. You can score three tacos for just $8, with an option to mix and match proteins for just a dollar more. Best of all, they host an all-you-can-eat taco deal on Tuesdays! For a flat rate, you can enjoy as many as you can… and don’t forget to BYOTequila!

Tres Jalepenos
Nora’s Taqueria & Grill
248 South Street

Take a stroll down South Street to find this unsuspected gem. Don’t let the tiny storefront mislead you. The ambiance is great, the service is undefeated, and the tacos are so full that you’re sure to be, too. Tacos go for $2.50 or $3 each, depending on the protein. In addition to delicious tacos, their housemade salsa and margaritas are to die for.

Nora’s Taqueria
Manny Brown’s
512 South Street

Even more unexpected on South Street is this dive bar. Although, this isn’t exclusively a Mexican restaurant, they have awesome, flavorful tacos. Best of all, they’re the star of the Taco Tuesday special. Every week, you can get $1.50 tacos and $4 Corona and Corona Lights.
