We have a dream… that everyone will get out in the city this week to honor MLK Day and other exciting events going on this week. Tag your events out and about in Philadelphia with #ThisWeekinPhilly.

Monday, January 15 – Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

  • The Please Touch Museum will be celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. with many free activities included with paid admission. There will be interactive story time, dancing, crafts, and more.
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Weekend will conclude at the Eastern State Penitentiary with many activities commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his incredible work. Visitors will get a look at one of the most important letters written by MLK, the Letter from Birmingham Jail.
  • The Franklin Institute, will have many activities to pay tribute to the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King. These activities include a scavenger hunt throughout the museum plus the chance to hear the iconic words of MLK’s I Have a Dream speech.

Tuesday, January 16

  • Take a tour of the city, Amazing Race style! The Amazing Scavenger Hunt Adventure- Philadelphia, gives teams the chance to complete challenges, solve clues and see the sights – all while learning local history. Sign up online and use promo code: PHILLYHAPPENINGS to save 20%.
  • See the beloved play A Doll’s House, by Henrik Ibsen brought to life by the Arden Theatre Company. The show begins at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, January 17

  • From now through February 4, the Winter Group Show at Twenty-Two Gallery will feature original works in many mediums and styles by local artists. Admission is free.
  • The Tony Award-winning play The Humans will begin its run at the Walnut street Theatre. This story is hilarious and unforgettable, so you won’t want to miss out!

Thursday, January 18

  • Start Your Business in 90 Minutes at the revamped Benjamin’s Desk in University City. Facilitated by John McAdam, a Wharton Business School professor, this workshop will give you the ins-and-outs of industry knowledge and resources.
  • Join activists and authors Patrisse Khan-Cullors, one of the founders of the Black Lives Matter movement, and Asha Bandele for  When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir. Don’t miss on the chance to engage in this eye-opening conversation at the Free Library of Philadelphia.

  • Get ready to wag your tails because the 24th annual Hair O’ The Dog* is kicking off on Saturday. The black tie event will feature themed rooms, gourmet food, and live performances you won’t want to miss!
  • The Women’s March on Philadelphia 2018 will be taking place, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Logan Square. The anniversary march and rally will be a day of awareness, advocacy, and action. “We Resist. We Persist. We Rise.”
  • Learn about the art and life of Violet Oakley at one of the lasts days of the exhibition at the Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut Hill. The lecture, Violet Oakley’s Art and Crafts Impulse, explains how Oakley’s work was shaped by the Arts and Crafts movement.

Sunday, January 21

  • Kids At Play is celebrating their second birthday. The Kids at Play 2nd Birthday Bash!* will kickoff at 10 a.m. and will be fun for the whole family!
  • The Philly Home Show 2018 concludes today at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The event offers new ideas to spruce up your home and will feature experts like Tyler Wisner, international designer, and Kevin O’Connor, host of PBS’s This Old House.
