7 Winter Activities to Kick Cabin Fever with the Kids

With six extra weeks of winter to go (thanks a lot, Punxsutawney Phil) and the weather’s crazy ups and downs, it can get hard to plan activities with the kids. On colder days, you may be feeling your family’s cabin fever kicking in. Here are seven fun-filled events and activities to help you and your kiddos keep calm and carry on until spring really arrives.

Seafarin’ Saturdays with Independence Seaport Museum
  1. Seed Starting with PHS at Dilworth Park (February 25): What better way to look forward to springtime than getting ready for the garden? Learn the basics of starting seeds and take home a few starter packets.
  2. African American History Month with the National Constitution Center (February): Pick up a handy flier at the Information Desk and take a self-guided museum tour highlighting important moments in African-American history. Admire rare, signed copies of the Thirteenth Amendment and Emancipation Proclamation, or President Obama inauguration artifacts.
  3. Seafarin’ Saturdays with Independence Seaport Museum (Saturdays in February and March): Nautical activities and adventures of distant shores for the whole family! From making pirate battle rattles to sailor valentines, children are sure to dive into fun.
  4. Open Play with Kids at Play (ongoing): Shout out to one of our former clients. Drop in to Kids at Play with your toddlers through 12-year-olds. Enjoy access to a state-of-the-art sensory gym including a zip line, interactive virtual playground, ball pit, toddler area, and more.
  5. Sliding with Smith Memorial Playground (ongoing): No snow for sledding? No problem. Turn winter frowns upside down by bundling up for a day of sliding instead! Situated on its original historic landscape, this playground is home to the century-old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, a “treasured play experience for generations of Philadelphia’s children” that can be enjoyed anytime of the year.
  6. Kids and Family programs with The Penn Museum (ongoing): In particular, try the March 8 event to read My Cousin Momo and enjoy an interactive gallery tour that celebrates differences. “Through close looking, role playing, and drawing activities, children explore the different ways we use and read facial expressions to convey and understand emotions today and within cultures from the past.” This event is geared towards both children on the autism spectrum and those who are not.
  7. Stroller Tours with Philadelphia Museum of Art (March 8 & April 12): While families of all ages are always welcome to the museum, this activity is intended to make it “a bit easier for [parents with babies]… If the baby fusses don’t fret — you’ll be in good company.”

What other family-friendly activities do you have planned for this month?
