On Sunday, November 20th, Phan Cave and Philly PR Girl hosted the 3rd annual Turkey Day Tailgate at Schmidt’s Commons. In partnership with Crabby’s Cafe & Sports Bar, this year’s event was a huge hit.  While the food, football and fall brews made the event amazing, it was the generous donations from guests that made it such a success.

Each person was asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to Philabundance, an organization that drives hunger from our communities today in an effort to end hunger forever. After the final weigh-in, this year’s tailgate raised a total of 791 pounds of food! None of that would have been possible without Devault Foods, who contributed a generous $1,000 donation of nonperishable food items towards the cause. Over the past three years, Turkey Day Tailgate has helped Philabundance provide over 1,000 meals to the 750,000 individuals who are food insecure in the area.

This year, the tailgate added a new exciting element to the party by bringing a few of Philly’s favorite restaurants to participate in a turkey-themed cookoff.  Some of Philly’s VIP judges weighed in on the best turkey dish including 96.5 Amp Radio’s Bex, Geno Vento of Geno’s Steaks, Tony Luke Jr. of Tony Luke’s, Roberta Pipito from Homemade Delish, Gervase Peterson from Survivor, and your favorite four-eyed founding father, Benjamin Franklin.

This year’s cook-off winner was Pastificio Deli, who wowed guests with their delicious gobbler sandwich. The sandwich’s winning combination included all Thanksgiving favorites with sliced turkey, cheese, stuffing, and their special cranberry mayo – all on a seeded long roll. The People’s Choice Awards was Devault Foods’ turkey steak, a unique take on another Philly classic. June Allan and Crabby’s Cafe also kept guests full and happy with deep-fried turkey sliders and spicy turkey gumbo.

After the turkey cook-off, guests helped themselves to pumpkin and pecan pie, thanks to Whole Foods Market. As the game went on, guests satisfied their thirst from our wonderful sponsors featuring Bai Water, Josh Cellars Wine, Samuel Adams, Fireball and Quaker City Mercantile. The halftime favorite was Instashack’s GIF photobooth — we’re obsessed!
