Favorite Health & Fitness Apps (1)

With so many upcoming fitness events, such as City Fit Girls’ FitRetreat, the Philly 10k and the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon (just to name a few), we’re trying to reset our mindset to focus on health and wellness. Luckily, today’s technology provides an abundance of resources at our fingertips. Here are some of our favorite health & fitness apps to get/keep you on track.

Taking a jog or going for a serious distance run has always been a fitness favorite. It’s a convenient way to get your heart pumping at little to no cost. (New sneaks are always motivating though.) MapMyRun and Nike+ are two fan-favorites that both offer user-friendly interface, share-with-friends capabilities and cross-app functionality. Use them to find routes, track your activity and progress, and get updates from their community and experts.

If you’re a newbie runner, C25k is effective at helping you learn how to pace yourself. It promises to help couch potato beginners become 5K distance runners in just 8 weeks. Whether you’re new or seasoned runner, Charity Miles is a great addition to your workout. Every step you take will have a new purpose: the organization of your choice. Choose between 37 charity partners, such as Girls On The Run, ASPCA, charity: water, (RED) and Feeding America.

Full-Body Workouts

If running is not for you, many apps can guide you through other type of workouts. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has become an increasingly popular form of workout. Some kick-ass ladies that have been spearheading the movement are the infamous Jillian Michaels and Aussie-based Kayla Itsines. Jillian’s Slim-Down app includes exclusive exercise videos, recipes, calorie counter, barcode scanner, run tracker, and more. The SWEAT with Kayla app features her signature Bikini Body Guide (BBG) programs that over 10 million women have used. It primarily uses bodyweight exercises, so minimal equipment is required, and each HIIT session is only 28 minutes long.

While not endorsed by a fitness celebrity, StrongLifts 5×5 is a simple, easy-to-use app to introduce you to lifting… or to keep you on track and accountable. It takes the guesswork out of lifting by advising you how much weight, how long to rest between sets and more. gymgoal is a great low-key app for everyone from beginners to gym buffs. Use it to personalize a workout broken out by the main muscle groups: legs/lower back, chest/shoulders/triceps, and lats/traps/forearms.

Only part of the fitness journey is based on working out. If you’re not eating right, it can negate your progress. MyFitnessPal is perhaps the most popular app to track your meals. It helps you be more mindful of every single thing you’re eating. Don’t reach for a snack and mindlessly eat out of boredom — but if you do, the vast database of over 5 million foods can keep you accountable of it.

Of course, the best way to make sure you’re eating healthy is to make all the food yourself. The ever-popular social app, Pinterest, is one of the best recipe resources when you’re in need of a little creativity. Next, download your local supermarket apps for the best savings with exclusive coupons for members. We love the ShopRite, Whole Foods and Target Cartwheel apps.

Not only is clean eating important, but staying hydrated is one of the most underrated tips — because it’s one of the most important! Plant Nanny is a fun, interactive way to log your daily water intake. Each glass of water helps to water your cute plant (and body)!

Body & Soul

Before overhauling your diet and exercise routine, your wellness begins with the ability to be in tune with your mind and body. If you’re feel stressed, keep Calm on your phone and carry on. This meditation app is set with a series of programs. Choose whichever one is right for you, whether it’s a 7-day guided recoup or a simple unguided meditation. Stress also affects other areas of health, like your period; keep track of your cycle with apps like Clue. To start your day on the right foot, try this new beta app called Yoga Wake Up. It will ease you to wake you up with a gentle yoga routine that starts with corpse pose (on your back).

Some people are lucky enough to have a buddy system with roommates, colleagues or significant others… but some are on their health mission solo. Hopefully these health & fitness apps can help each and every single person looking for a little bit of motivation. It’s never too late to start living your best life!
