Neighborhood Spotlight: Queen Village

philly queen village

Located east of 6th Street and between South Street and Washington Avenue, Queen Village is home to Fabric Row, unique shops, quaint restaurants and local bars. While it can quieter than some of its neighboring ‘hoods, it sure doesn’t lack any personality.

Start the day off right with brunch since there are plenty of options in the area. A new option in the area is Hungry Pigeon, owned by Chef Scott Schroeder of American Sardine Bar in Point Breeze. Expect some interesting twists to brunch such as the breakfast salad with greens, bacon, cheddar cheese, lentils, hash browns and a poached egg.

Then, walk it off by shopping around. Some of the best finds are available for cheap at the non-profit Philly AIDS Thrift on 5th Street. The proceeds are distributed to local organizations involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS. There are plenty of vintage and antique stores in the area as well. Find one-of-a-kind pieces at Nostalgia, RareCo Vintage, Moon and Arrow and more.

If you’re feeling ambitious, try a DIY project. PIck out your own fabrics at the city’s Fabric Row to make a custom piece like no other – whether it’s clothing, accessories or furniture upholstery. For alterations, try Phuong’s Tailor and Fabrics. Need new seat cushions or window drapings, head to B. Wilk Fabrics or Adler Fabrics.

Need to sit and take a break? Japan’s cat cafe craze has come to Philly with Kawaii Kitty Cafe. Sip on some delicious coffee, teas or smoothies while playing with adorable kittens. Don’t try to resist the urge to take them home! The cafe’s mission is to find a home for older cats, as well as cats who have lived in shelters for a significant length of time.

Looking for ethnic bites? Try Kanella South, the renovated, relocated version of the popular original in Center City with the addition of a bar. It’s known for its Greek and Mediterranean classics such as kebabs, halloumi, octopus and lamb. Visit during happy hour on Tuesdays through Fridays from 5-7pm and bonus weekend specials on Sunday from 6-9pm.

To end the night with drinks, visit Kip, owner and bartender at Southwark, for classy cocktails like an Aviation or Martinez. Whether it’s wine, beer or spirits, the team here can pair something to go with your fine dining. From the seasonal vegetables to the cured meats, this place is known for freshness. If you’d rather BYOB, try a creative spin with Painting with a Twist, located on East Passyunk Ave, where you can get your creative juices and wine flowing. No artistic experience required. (Seriously!)

As you can see, there’s no shortage of activities for your entertainment or appetite in Queen Village. For the latest in this area, visit the neighborhood association’s website, or follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
